Alexander the Great and Hellenization in the 4th Century BCE
Alexander the Great was the son of Philip II of Macedon and the man who started the #hellenistic era during the 4th century BCE. After inheriting the Macedonian Empire when Philip II died, Alexander the Great extended it into the largest empire his world had seen. #Alexander the #Great fought many battles, but one of the most significant one was the #Battle of #Issus. The Battle of #Issus saw Alexander the Great and his soldiers fight Darius III and the Achaemenid Persian Empire.
#Hellenization was the process of disseminating Greek culture and language throughout the areas Alexander had conquered, and this process continued after his death, led by his generals Ptolemy and Seleucus. The 4th c. BCE also saw the rise of Greek philosophy with the lives of Plato and Aristotle, who was Alexa...

Agentes in Rebus - 4th Century Roman Imperial Agents
The Agentes in Rebus where couriers and agents institutionalised in the Dominate era, probably starting with Diocletians reforms. Procopius notes about them in the 6th century: "The earlier Emperors, in order to gain the most speedy information concerning the movements of the enemy in each territory, seditions or unforeseen accidents in individual towns, and the actions of the governors and other officials in all parts of the Empire, and also in order that those who conveyed the yearly tribute might do so without danger or delay, had established a rapid service of public couriers."
In our short little video here we imagined some Agentes in Rebus in Pannonia during the crisis between Augustus Constantius II. and his cousin and Caesar, Julianus II. Constantius, weary of Julians troop movem...

https://commons.allard.ubc.ca/theses/576/
This research is focused around a central question: why did Constantine make bishops judges and legislate them into this role with two pieces of legislation in 318 and 333? The short answer to this question is that he appears to have made this move based on his firsthand experience with the bishops sitting as judges in the Donatist hearings, wherein certain rigorist bishops had appealed their case to his court. He ultimately sat with a panel of other bishop judges in 316 and, as Emperor, decided the matter by making the same findings as the lower court of bishops he had initially sequestered for this task. The main reasons Constantine made the bishops judges can be summarized as follows: 1) Christian bishops were beholden to Constantine for saving their religion from persecuting emperors. After witnessing their ability to decide the Donatist legal proceedings at various levels of court and himself coming to the same decision, Constantine dovetailed their role as judges in the Christian community to one that would serve the state, and he reasonably expected them to cooperate. 2) The second reason is connected to the first, and concerns Constantine’s anger against the level of corruption in Roman courts, something he clearly legislated against in 331. As bishops were commissioned by their own religion to care for the poor, and because of the strict moral code of the bishops, it seems reasonable to suggest that Constantine hoped that bishops as judges might be part of the answer to making sure that the poor in society had access to justice in a court that was not corrupt. This may also have been an end-run on the rank-and-file judges in so far as the knowledge that litigants could simply request their case be transferred to a bishop’s court may have been intended to spur them to less corrupt practices more generally. The timing of his decision to make them judges is suggestive, if not conclusive: almost immediately following his experience in the Donatist appeal cases, Constantine made the bishops judges in the Roman legal system.

Constantius, weary of Julians troop movements from Gaul eastwards, wants to make sure that the Danubian provinces do not support his march through. He sends instructions to his local Agens in Rebus and a list of names of local officials that need to be closely monitored or even killed in case they declare openly for Julian. It is a time of great tension and division and since the Agens in Rebus is himself closely monitored by local elites he can't be seen to receive secret orders that could tip the elites over to Julians side. He therefore has installed a secret meeting place with various courriers in an old quarry in the hills near Savaria. Ruins of older structures left a century and a half earlier, are littering the landscape near the provincial seat of power.
Music: Paean...Anon. (3rd or 4th c. AD) by Ensemble Organographia
