4660 Nereus
4660 Nereus (/ˈnɪəriəs/ NEER-ee-əs; Greek: Νηρέας, provisional designation 1982 DB) is a small (about 0.33 kilometres (0.21 mi)) asteroid. It was discovered by Eleanor F. Helin on February 28, 1982, approximately 1 month after a near pass by the Earth.
Nereus is potentially a very important asteroid. It is an Apollo and Mars-crosser, with an orbit that frequently comes very close to Earth, and because of this it is exceptionally accessible to spacecraft. Indeed, because of its small size and close orbit, its delta-V for rendezvous of ~5 km/s is smaller than the Moon's, which is about 6.3 km/s.
Nereus makes seven approaches to Earth of less than 5 million km between 1900 and 2100. The closest will be in February 2060, at 1.2 million km. The next close approach is in December 2021, when it will be 3.9 million km away. Its orbital period of 1.82 yr also puts it somewhat near a 2:1 orbital resonance with Earth, which means that an approximately 4-year mission could depart for and return from the asteroid on relatively near passes to the Earth.

US space agency NASA has warned that a huge asteroid is moving towards the Earth. The size of this asteroid is bigger than the Eiffel Tower in France.
T4660 Nereus is being considered by NASA as a 'Potentially Hazardous Asteroid'. According to the space agency, the asteroid will come close to Earth on December 11. It is 330 meters long, which makes it 90% larger than all other asteroids.
The T4660 Nereus will not pose a threat to our planet and will fly past earth at a distance of 2.4 million miles on 11 December, which is more than 10 times the distance between Earth and the Moon.
Although the 330m large asteroid, which is named 4660 Nereus, is unlikely to pose any threat, also it is predicted to make twelve more close passes in the coming decades.
According to NASA, the asteroid orbits the sun every 664 days. It will pass by Earth at a great distance and is predicted not to come close to the planet until 2nd March 2031 again.
The closest approach of this egg-shaped asteroid is predicted to be on 14 February, 2060, when it will be just under 745,645 miles away.
Nereus is not a newly-discovered asteroid. US astronomer Eleanor F. Helin spotted it for the first time in the year 1982. It then went on to be classified as a member of the Apollo group of asteroids which are known for crossing the path of the Earth while orbiting the Sun.
Like other apollo-class asteroids, Nereus' orbit puts it frequently close to Earth. It actually orbits almost twice for every orbit of Earth, thus making missions to explore this asteroid becomes easy and much feasible.
NASA scientists have already proposed missions to the Nereus asteroid. But the plans never materialised for various reasons.
The space agency wanted to send Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous – Shoemaker probe to the asteroid.

US space agency NASA has warned that a huge asteroid is moving towards the Earth. The size of this asteroid is bigger than the Eiffel Tower in France.
T4660 Nereus is being considered by NASA as a 'Potentially Hazardous Asteroid'. According to the space agency, the asteroid will come close to Earth on December 11. It is 330 meters long, which makes it 90% larger than all other asteroids.
The T4660 Nereus will not pose a threat to our planet and will fly past earth at a distance of 2.4 million miles on 11 December, which is more than 10 times the distance between Earth and the Moon.
Although the 330m large asteroid, which is named 4660 Nereus, is unlikely to pose any threat, also it is predicted to make twelve more close passes in the coming decades.
According to NASA, the asteroid orbits the sun every 664 days. It will pass by Earth at a great distance and is predicted not to come close to the planet until 2nd March 2031 again.
The closest approach of this egg-shaped asteroid is predicted to be on 14 February, 2060, when it will be just under 745,645 miles away.
Nereus is not a newly-discovered asteroid. US astronomer Eleanor F. Helin spotted it for the first time in the year 1982. It then went on to be classified as a member of the Apollo group of asteroids which are known for crossing the path of the Earth while orbiting the Sun.
Like other apollo-class asteroids, Nereus' orbit puts it frequently close to Earth. It actually orbits almost twice for every orbit of Earth, thus making missions to explore this asteroid becomes easy and much feasible.
NASA scientists have already proposed missions to the Nereus asteroid. But the plans never materialised for various reasons.
The space agency wanted to send Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous – Shoemaker probe to the asteroid.

HOUSTON — A 330-meter-wide ‘Don’t Look Up Style’ asteroid, around the size of the Eiffel Tower, is heading towards Earth, and is expected to pass us by on December 11, 2021.
The asteroid, known as 4660 Nereus, is calculated to be passing about 2.4 million miles away from Earth, however The Scotsman explains that because its diameter is wider than 140 meters and it will approach Earth at less than half the distance from the Earth to the sun, it is classified as “potentially hazardous,” which means only a relatively slight deviation in its massive orbit could place it on a collision course with Earth and that that could cause “major regional damage.”
An unlikely chance of a collision, however, is actually more likely in 2060, when 4660 Nereus will pass within just 745,000 miles of Earth on Valentine’s Day.

NASA has been monitoring the asteroid 4660 Nereus since the early 1980s, looking after its every move because of its close proximity to Earth. Come December 11th, the asteroid will pass by the planet the closest it's been in the past 20 years. While Nereus will still be roughly 2.4 million miles from us—or roughly 10 times the distance between the Earth and our moon—the space agency is still classifying the asteroid as a "potentially hazardous" Near-Earth Object (NEO) due to its size.
The behemoth is over 492 feet wide and some 1,082 feet long, roughly the size of France's Eiffel Tower. If all goes as planned, Nereus will scream by the planet at a whopping 14,700 miles an hour.
According to the Asterank asteroid database, Nereus could contain billions of dollars worth of nickel, iron, and cobalt. Because of its close proximity to Earth, researchers also suggest it could be a prime candidate for space mining someday.

A gigantic, "potentially hazardous" space rock bigger than the Eiffel Tower will enter Earth’s orbital path on Dec. 11, according to NASA.
The egg-shaped asteroid, named 4660 Nereus, is 1,082 feet (330 meters) long and will break into Earth’s orbit traveling at 14,700 mph (23,700 km/h) on Saturday, Dec. 11. Thankfully for all of our weekend plans, the asteroid is expected to skim past Earth at some distance without making impact, but it will still be closer to us than it has been in 20 years.
Nereus — named after the Greek sea god who was the son of Gaia, the personification of the Earth — will be roughly 2.4 million miles away (3.86 million km), around 10 times the distance between Earth and the moon. This may sound like an enormous gap, but by cosmic standards, it’s actually a stone’s throw away.

An Eiffel Tower-sized asteroid is expected to fly past Earth in December, according to NASA.
On Dec. 11, the asteroid 4660 Nereus will be at its peaks closeness to Earth at about 2.5 million miles away, and scientists say it poses no danger. According to NASA, the asteroid is about 2,790 feet in diameter, the Eiffel Tower is 1,063 feet tall.
Over the past few weeks, asteroids about the size of cars, houses, commercial jetliner, and the Empire State Building have past by Earth. However, the largest asteroid – 2004 UE – is expected to pass by on Nov. 13. The 2004 UE is 1,246 feet, just four feet shorter than the Empire State Building.
According to NASA, most near-Earth objects pose no risk to our planet, however plans are in the works to create warning systems and diversion tactics if Earth was ever in danger

4660 Nereus (/ˈnɪəriəs/ NEER-ee-əs; Greek: Νηρέας, provisional designation 1982 DB) is a small (about 0.33 kilometres (0.21 mi)) asteroid. It was discovered by Eleanor F. Helin on February 28, 1982, approximately 1 month after a near pass by the Earth.
Nereus is potentially a very important asteroid. It is an Apollo and Mars-crosser, with an orbit that frequently comes very close to Earth, and because of this it is exceptionally accessible to spacecraft. Indeed, because of its small size and close orbit, its delta-V for rendezvous of ~5 km/s is smaller than the Moon's, which is about 6.3 km/s.
Nereus makes seven approaches to Earth of less than 5 million km between 1900 and 2100. The closest will be in February 2060, at 1.2 million km. The next close approach is in December 2021, when it will be 3.9 million km away. Its orbital period of 1.82 yr also puts it somewhat near a 2:1 orbital resonance with Earth, which means that an approximately 4-year mission could depart for and return from the asteroid on relatively near passes to the Earth.
