Line of Fire "Volume I" (2/12) : The Battle of El Alamein
For educational purposes
In 1942, after a crushing defeat in France and the loss of Singapore to Japan, British forces produced Germany's first major defeat at El Alamein, in northwestern Egypt.
It was an unqualified success, and signaled to the British that the war was not hopeless.
As Churchill later remarked, "Before Alamein we never had a victory; after Alamein we never had a defeat."

***From the 2002 Movie "El Alamein - La Linea del Fuoco" ***
"On 14 July, the New Zealand 2nd Infantry attacked two under-strength Italian divisions (the Brescia and Pavia) on western Ruweisat Ridge, but without tanks they could not remove the Italians, and were eventually driven back by the arriving 15th Panzer Division. At Deir un Khawaber, New Zealand infantry supported by Bren Gun Carriers penetrated the 8th Bersaglieri Regiment's defenses before being driven off by Italian tanks. On 21 July, Italian infantry still occupied the western spur of Ruweisat Ridge. Two Allied infantry divisions, supported by a British armored division attempted to push them off, but counter-attacking Italian infantry and tanks sent New Zealand troops back to their...

(Source: http://www.comandosupremo.com/1elalamein.html First Battle of El Alamein COMANDO SUPREMO/ITALY AT WAR)
"The way was now open for another bid to complete the capture of Tell el Eisa, and this time the 2/23rd Battalion did in daylight on 16 July, aided by tanks from 8 RTR. The Australians demolished the remaining battalion of Sabratha Division ... The success was shortlived ... On Tel el Eisa the situation was now too hot for the Australians ... They withdrew again." (Dance of War, p. 165, Peter Bates, Pen & Sword, 1992)
Major Renzo Rastrelli recalled the failed Australian attack:
"The enemy was close at hand, their patrols and armored cars were all over the road. Without hesitation the battery commander, Captain Comi, opened fire at minimum elevation ... handling his massive 149s as if they were machine guns. The space before the leveled guns was clear in no time. The ground was plowed up in front of the guns for a distance close on 20 yards....The guns became red-hot, and many of the handlers were burnt....The area in front of Comi was deserted, except for blazing vehicles and dead Australians." (Rommel's Desert War, Samuel W. Mitcham, pp. 118-119, Stackpole Books, 2007)
Australian 2/32nd Battalion surrenders to 3rd Trento Battalion:
"Soon the companies had seized the enemy positions on the ridge, but, in the dark, the men of A Company overshot their objective, Point 22, by 1,500 yards. By the time they realised their mistake they were under such heavy fire that they could not withdraw. By 08.00 hours Italian tanks and infantry began to encircle their positions and eventually forced the entire company to surrender." (Three Battles at El Alamein, Niall Barr, p. 148, Random House, 2010)
Australian 2/28th Battalion surrenders to Trieste Recce Squadron (not German panzers!!!):
"The Bn was completely surrounded by ARMORED CARS which worked forward under cover of fire from enemy tanks further back, while 20mm, MMG and mortar fire kept the heads of our own troops well down. In this manner the enemy was able to cut off and dispose of sections and platoons one by one, until at 1030 hrs Bn HQ area was occupied by several ARMORED CARS and surviving personnel taken prisoner. An effort had been made to hinder the enemy armored vehicles by bringing Arty fire to bear on them before they dispersed. Unfortunately the only communication with Bde was by one wireless set WT repaired by Sigs, after about eight hours work. Messages reporting the situation were sent immediately once this set was capable of functioning, i.e., about 0930 hrs onwards. Last message was “All up, overrun!”" (https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/RCDIG1026672/?image=5 July 1942 Diary by Lieutenant S. A. Walker)
“The names of certain units were on everyone’s lips up and down the line following particularly brilliant actions, among them the reconnaissance Group of the Trieste. It had been set up some time previously: it was hardly a homogeneous unit on the German pattern, but did reflect admirably the Italian genius of improvisation. They had no more than nine vehicles–Morrises, Fords, Dingos and Jeeps, all captured from the enemy–armed with small caliber guns and machine-guns of all descriptions, British, Italian and German, together with two British 88 guns and their carriages, and two small supply lorries.” (Alamein 1933-1962, Paolo Caccia Dominioni de Sillavengo, p. 79, Allen & Unwin, 1966)
"Assuming that the Italians were demoralized and easy pickings was a mistake, which the 9th Australian Division, the heroes of the defense of Tobruk in 1941, learned to its regret. A night attack against the Trento and Trieste Divisions, after some initial success, was bloodily repulsed, one entire battalion of Australian infantry being overrun." (The Life & Death of Erwin Rommel, Daniel Allen Butler, p. 352, Casemate, 2015)
"There were some courageous efforts by Italian units against Australians at Alamein, but these have gone largely unnoticed in Australian writings ... In wartime and published Australian accounts of Alamein actions, it is not always possible to determine whether "the enemy" referred to was German or Italian ... However, the lack of credit probably derives more from a desire to inflate Australian achievements, and an unwillingness to acknowledge reverses against Italians." (Fighting the Enemy, Mark Johnston, pp. 12-13, Cambridge University Press, 2006)

RUWEISAT RIDGE (FIRST BATTLE OF EL ALAMEIN)
Two Allied infantry divisions, supported by a British armored division attempted to push them off, but counter-attacking Italian infantry and tanks sent New Zealand troops back to their own lines. A second attack the next day was aborted by Italian artillery fire—but an Italian counterattack was similarly dispersed by New Zealand artillery. British tanks supported the New Zealanders, but withdrew after losing several tanks to Italian fire. By nightfall of 22 July, the New Zealand infantry broke contact with the Italians, and left them in possession of the western spur of Ruweisat Ridge." (Regio Esercito: The Italian Royal Army in Mussolini's Wars, 1935-1943, Patrick Cloutier, pp. 85-86, Lulu Press, 2013)
"While the attacking brigades had been able to cut large gaps through the defences held y the Italian infantry, they had not been able to subdue all the resistance. Not surprisingly, most of the smaller outposts and defended localities had fallen easily but some of the larger posts had been bypassed during the night. The outposts which remained contained substantial number of anti-tank guns, machine guns and infantry. When daylight came, these posts were able to cover the area south of the ridge by fire and shot up any trucks foolhardy enough to drive forward." (Pendulum Of War: Three Battles at El Alamein, Niall Barr, p. 131, Random House, 2010)
"On the right, Indian 5th Division (XXX Corps) attacked Point 64 on the centre of the feature, the New Zealand Division (XIII Corps) was on the left attacking Point 63 at the western end of the ridge and the 1st Armoured Division gave support along the line of the inter-corps boundary. The night attack was preceded by Albacore aircraft dropping flares and fighter-bombers strafing the enemy lines. At first both divisions made good progress as they fought their way through the Italian Brescia and Pavia Divisions who were holding the ridge. The advance slowed down when they met extensive minefields and there was some loss of cohesion when the New Zealanders were attacked by tanks from 8th Panzer Regiment of 15th Panzer Division and lost 350 prisoners." (El Alamein 1942: The Turning of the Tide, Ken Ford, p. 42, Osprey Publishing, 2005)
Radio Rome:
“The fighting which assumed particular tenacity has ended in favour of the Axis. The enemy has been everywhere repelled with counter-attacks and has sustained grave losses in men and materiel. Eight hundred prisoners, mainly New Zealanders, and Indians have fallen into our hands and 130 tanks were destroyed on the field. During that action the German Afrika Korps and the Italian Brescia and Trieste divisions particularly distinguished themselves.” (https://web.archive.org/web/20180205030506/http://www.comandosupremo.com/1elalamein.html/3 Many Of These Men Resisted To The Last Bullet)
"A mixed German-Italian combat team held on and proved that not all Italians had lost the will to fight. Many of these men resisted to the last bullet. Their heroic stand gave Rommel time to concentrate his Afrika Korps against the 23rd Armoured Brigade." (Rommel's Desert War: The Life and Death of the Afrika Korps, Samuel W. Mitcham, p. 122, Stackpole Books, 2007)
Field Marshal Erwin Rommel:
“The Italians were willing, unselfish and good comrades in the front line. There can be no disputing that the achievement of all the Italian units, especially the motorized elements, far outstripped any action of the Italian Army for 100 years. Many Italian generals and officers earned our respect as men as well as soldiers.” (https://web.archive.org/web/20180205030506/http://www.comandosupremo.com/1elalamein.html/3 Many Of These Men Resisted To The Last Bullet)
