2014 PDC World Darts Championship

The 2014 Ladbrokes World Darts Championship was the 21st World Championship organised by the Professional Darts Corporation since it separated from the British Darts Organisation. The event started on 13 December 2013 and concluded on 1 January 2014 and was held at the Alexandra Palace, London, England.

Phil Taylor was the defending champion, having won his 16th title in 2013, but he lost 4–3 to Michael Smith in the second round.

Michael van Gerwen won his first World Championship by defeating Peter Wright 7–4 in the final. He became the sixth winner of the event and, at the age of 24, the youngest. The result also saw him replace Taylor as the new world number one. A new record of 603 maximum 180 scores were made during the championship, beating the previous best of 588 set in 2012. For the first time in PDC history there was no Englishman in the final.

Format and qualifiers

The televised stages featured 72 players. The top 32 players in the PDC Order of Merit on 26 November 2013 were seeded for the tournament. They were joined by the 16 highest non-qualified players from the Pro Tour Order of Merit, based on the events played on the 2013 PDC Pro Tour.

2011 PDC World Darts Championship

The 2011 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship was the 18th World Championship organised by the Professional Darts Corporation since it separated from the British Darts Organisation.

Phil Taylor was the defending champion, having won the 2010 tournament. He was knocked out of the tournament at the quarter final stage by Mark Webster, who in turn was defeated by Adrian Lewis in the semi-finals. Lewis went on to win the tournament, beating Gary Anderson 7–5 in the final to become only the fifth different PDC World Champion and the first to have won it without having won the rival BDO World Championship.

The event took place from 16 December 2010 until 3 January 2011, with two breaks for Christmas and New Year. The tournament was held for the fourth time at London's Alexandra Palace. A total of 72 players took part, 16 of whom began at the preliminary round stage, with the eight winners joining the remaining 56 players in the first round proper.

The final between Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson was the last match that Sid Waddell commentated on at the PDC World Darts Championship.

The 2010 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship was the 17th World Championship organised by the Professional Darts Corporation since it separated from the British Darts Organisation.

Phil Taylor gained the title with a 7–3 victory over Simon Whitlock, defending successfully his title from the 2009 tournament.Raymond van Barneveld recorded the second nine dart finish in the history of the tournament in his second round match against Brendan Dolan.

The event took place from 18 December 2009 until 3 January 2010 – albeit with two breaks in between for Christmas and New Year. The tournament was held for the third time at London's Alexandra Palace.

The televised stages featured 72 players, an increase of 2 from last year. The top 32 players in the PDC Order of Merit on 1 December 2009 were seeded for the tournament. They were joined by the 16 highest non qualified players in the Players Championship Order of Merit from events played on the PDC Pro Tour.

World Professional Darts Championship

The World Professional Darts Championship is one of the most important tournaments in the darts calendar. Originally held as an annual event between 1978 and 1993, players then broke off into two separate organisations after a controversial split in the game. Each organisation, the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) now organise their own World Championship in January. As a result, there is no longer a unified World Champion in the game. Phil Taylor has won 16 world titles, 2 in the BDO and 14 in the PDC version, and is widely considered the greatest player ever.

The BDO have organised their version dating back to 1978, when it was held at the Heart of the Midlands nightclub, Nottingham. The following year it moved to the Jollees Cabaret Club, Stoke, where it stayed until 1985. Since then it has been held at the Lakeside Leisure Complex at Frimley Green, Surrey.

The PDC version started in 1994 after "the split", with a field of players containing all active previous World Champions from the BDO. It was originally staged at Purfleet's Circus Tavern, Essex before moving to Alexandra Palace for the 2008 World Championship.

2013 PDC World Darts Championship

The 2013 Ladbrokes World Darts Championship was the 20th World Championship organised by the Professional Darts Corporation since it separated from the British Darts Organisation.

The event started on 14 December 2012 and concluded on 1 January 2013. It was held at the Alexandra Palace, London, England.

Adrian Lewis was the defending champion having won the last two editions of the tournament, but was beaten by Michael van Gerwen in the quarter-finals, thus ending Lewis' 15 match unbeaten run at the World Championship.

Phil Taylor won his 16th World Championship title with a 7–4 victory over van Gerwen in the final, despite trailing 0–2 and then 2–4 after six sets. Taylor then won five sets in a row for the win. van Gerwen averaged between 105 and 108 in the early sets but as his average dropped, Taylor's rose as did his ascendancy over a rival he admitted in the post-match interview was 'hard to crack'.
