Why Israel lost the 2006 Lebanon War - The Dahiyeh Doctrine | The Big Picture
During Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 2006, its generals realised they couldn’t fight Hezbollah on the ground.
So they resorted to a campaign of psychological warfare: “The Dahiyeh Doctrine”.
If it inflicted enough damage on the Lebanese people, Israel believed they would rise up and overthrow their rulers.
But it didn’t work, and despite ultimately losing the war, Israel would continue to implement this strategy in every conflict, especially in Gaza.
And now that it’s invading Lebanon once again, it’s resorting to the same brutal tactics.
This week on The Big Picture, we examine why Israel lost the 2006 Lebanon War, and why it’s repeating the very same mistakes today.

Last time Israel went into Lebanon was in 2006: What have changed? • FRANCE 24 English
Israel's widely expected ground invasion of Lebanon appeared to be getting underway early on Tuesday as its military said troops had begun "limited" raids against Hezbollah targets in the border area. Israel, which has engaged in border warfare with Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah movement for a year in parallel with the Gaza conflict, has a long history of military incursions and invasions in Lebanon.

DAILY DOSE | Israel and Hezbollah have not engaged in all out war in over a decade since 2006, when the balance was far more in Israel's favor militarily. Now, however, that balance may shifted slightly with Hezbollah's new arsenal of weapons. Our Daniel Tsemach has the story.
Story:
On Wednesday, Iranian Revolutionary Guards Commander Hussein Salami declared that Lebanese militant group "Hezbollah has acquired capabilities in Syria that allow it to destroy Israel alone."
The warring comments seem to affirm Israel's concerns over Iranian-backed activity in war-torn Syria, where the Jewish state has admitted to conducting "hundreds of strikes" on Iranian-linked targets.
Also Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani made it clear that Gulf states could ensure the region's security without the need for foreign forces, Iran's state media reported, following reports that Israel could join a US-led naval force in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The comments from come after a Lebanese lawmaker affiliated with Hezbollah warned at the start of the week that Israel was preparing to wage war against the Iran-backed group but that it was ready to “confront it.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted that the Israeli military were responsible for carrying out a missile strike on Hezbollah targets in Syria earlier this month.
Salami also addressed the escalating tensions with the United States that were estimated to lead either to negotiations or a potential military conflict following the back-and-forth seizures of tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and the further breach of the nuclear deal terms.
"The Iranian people forgot about talking to the United States and removed it from his thought," he said in reference to suggestions in recent weeks of possible talks between the nations following international calls to reduce tensions.
He went so far as to say that "negotiating with the US is not the way to resolve [matters], arguing that simply having talks with the US will only increase the pressure and demands on the Ayatollah regime, "to make us surrender."
