The 14th Pan American Games were held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from August 1 until August 17, 2003. The successful bid for the games was made in the mid-1990s, when Dominican Republic had one of the highest growth rates in Latin America.
All 42 PASO countries and over 5,223 athletes pre-registered for the participation in the XIV Pan American Games. An additional 2,425 trainers and delegates attended. The United States pre-registered the most athletes (713) and Saint Lucia entered the least(6). The host country entered 562 athletes.
The games opened at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez before a crowd of 48,000. The exhibition featured some 10,000 performers, some dressed in costumes ranging from skeletons to men in tuxedoes and top hats, typifying a Dominican carnival.
Local baseball heroes Juan Marichal and Pedro Martínez were on hand for the ceremony. They completed the final lap of the torch and with Luis Pujols, the nephew of the San Francisco Giants coach of the same name, dressed in a Dominican baseball uniform, swung a bat at a baseball sitting atop the mini-flame which triggered the cauldron.
The National Congress of State Games is a nonprofit organization consisting of 31 Summer State Games and 10 Winter State Games. In addition, there are four State Games with developing memberships in the NCSG. The Congress is part of the United States Olympic Committee and organizes the State Games of America, an Olympic-style multi-sport event in which athletes who have won a medal in their home state's Games are eligible to compete.
The 1999 Pan American Games, officially the XIII Pan American Games or the 13th Pan American Games, was a major international multi-sport event that was held from July 23-August 8, 1999 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Approximately 5,000 athletes from 42 nations participated at the games. The competition was marred by a total of 7 positive drug tests.
Financially, the 1999 games were a success, generating a surplus of $8.9 million through a combination of fiscal restraint and the contribution of nearly 20,000 volunteers.
The 3rd Pan American Games were held in Chicago August 28 – September 7, 1959.
Background
The games were originally awarded to Cleveland. Cleveland withdrew from hosting the games due to financial reasons. The original backup-host, Guatemala, withdrew even before Cleveland. São Paulo, Brazil and Chicago competed to replace Cleveland as the host of the Pan American Games. Chicago defeated São Paulo 13-6 in the Pan American Games Committee vote held August 3, 1957. São Paulo later would go on to host the following edition.
Organization
Once Chicago took over the game following Cleveland's withdrawal, there were 18 months left to organize the games. The games were held on-schedule nonetheless. The games were the first Pan American Games to be held in the Northern Hemisphere'ssummer. The previous two editions were held in March.
Santiago, Chile, had originally been awarded the 7th Pan American Games. Financial difficulties and political turmoil forced the organizers to withdraw. The Brazilian city of São Paulo was then awarded the games, but was forced to withdraw on October 17, 1974 due to financial problems and a meningitis outbreak. On October 19, 1974, Mexico City was named host city. PASO members were impressed by the organization of the Games on such short notice. So much so, that they elected the President of the Mexican Olympic Committee, Mario Vázquez Raña, as the next PASO President during their meeting in Mexico City.
