The 1994 Scottish League Cup Final was played on 27 November 1994, at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow and was the final of the 49th Scottish League Cup competition. The final was contested by Raith Rovers and Celtic. Raith Rovers won the final on a penalty shootout after the match ended in a 2–2 draw.
The 1987 Scottish League Cup Final was played on 25 October 1987 at Hampden Park in Glasgow and was the final of the 42nd Scottish League Cup competition. The final was contested by Aberdeen and Rangers. Rangers defeated Aberdeen 5–3 on penalties after both sides drew 3–3.
Celtic won the match 2–0 for their 15th League Cup title, with goals in either half from Kris Commons and substitute James Forrest. Dundee United captain Seán Dillon was sent off, and Forrest later had a penalty saved by Radosław Cierzniak after being fouled by Paul Dixon.
Background
Celtic played their 30th Scottish League Cup Final, with a previous record of 14 victories (second to Rangers' 27) and 15 defeats. Their last final was in 2012, a 0–1 defeat to Kilmarnock, and their last victory was in 2009 when they beat Rangers 2–0 after extra time.
It was Dundee United's seventh final, and they had a record of two victories and four defeats. Their last appearance was in 2008, when they lost to Rangers in a penalty shootout after a 2–2 draw. Dundee United's two previous victories came consecutively in 1979 and 1980, both 3–0 wins against Aberdeen and city rivalsDundee F.C. respectively.
The 1965 Scottish League Cup Final was played on 23 October 1965 at Hampden Park in Glasgow and it was the final of the 20th Scottish League Cup competition. The final was contested by the Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic for a second consecutive year. Celtic gained revenge for their defeat in the previous final, as they won the match 2–1 thanks to two goals by John "Yogi" Hughes.
The 2006 Football League Cup Final was played between Manchester United and Wigan Athletic on 26 February 2006. Manchester United won the match comfortably, by four goals to nil. Louis Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored one goal, and Wayne Rooney scored twice. For the trophy presentation, the Manchester United players wore special shirts reading "For You Smudge", referring to Alan Smith, who had broken his left leg during a recent FA Cup match against Liverpool. Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt picked up a hamstring injury after just 14 minutes, cutting short a dream cup final for the journeyman player, who started his career with the Red Devils.
The 1967 Football League Cup Final was an association football match between Queens Park Rangers (QPR) and West Bromwich Albion on 4 March 1967 at Wembley Stadium, London. It was the final match of the 1966–67 Football League Cup, the seventh season of the Football League Cup, a football competition for the teams in The Football League. This was the first final to be decided over a single game; the six previous finals were contested over two legs. QPR were appearing in their first final, while Albion were appearing in their second after winning the previous final in 1966.
As QPR were in the Third Division they played one more round than Albion who received a bye in the first round. Therefore, QPR progressed through six rounds to reach the final, whereas Albion progressed through five. Matches up to the semi-final were contested on a one-off basis with the exception of the semi-finals which were contested over two-legs, with a match at each team's home ground. QPR's matches were generally close affairs, they only won by a three two goal margin or more in three of their matches. Albion's matches were almost all comfortable victories. Their biggest margin of victory was five goals when they beat Aston Villa 6–1. While the only match did not win was the second leg of the semi-final against West Ham United, which was drawn 2–2.
The 2005 Football League Cup Final was a football match played between Liverpool and Chelsea on 27 February 2005 at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. It was the final match of the 2004–05 Football League Cup, the 45th season of the Football League Cup, a football competition for the 92 teams in the Premier League and Football League. Liverpool were appearing in their tenth final; they had previously won seven and lost two while Chelsea were appearing in the final for the fourth time. They had previously won twice and lost once.
As both teams were in the Premier League, they entered the competition in the third round. Liverpool's matches were generally close affairs, with only two victories secured by two goals or more. A 2–0 win over Middlesbrough in the fourth round was followed by a 4–3 victory in a penalty shootout after their quarter-final match with Tottenham Hotspur finished 1–1. Chelsea's matches were also close affairs, their only victory by more than one goal was against Newcastle United in the fourth round, which they won 2–0.
