The 1987 MLB season was unlike any other. Across baseball, batters were hitting home runs at unprecedented rates, shattering records and leaving fans and the media alike stunned. Players like Wade Boggs, Andre Dawson, and Dale Murphy set career highs, while newcomers like Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco broke out onto the national stage.
As the '87 season wore on, many began to speculate about the cause of this power surge. Some blamed it on the pitchers. Others said it had to do with metal bats in high schools. But most people agreed that something else was at the root of the home run spike.
