1968 Summer Olympics
The 1968 Summer Olympics (Spanish: Juegos Olímpicos de Verano de 1968), officially known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event held in Mexico City, Mexico, in October 1968.
These were the first Olympic Games to be staged in Latin America and the first to be staged in a Spanish-speaking country. They were also the first Games to be held in a developing country (previously, all Olympic Games had been held in First World countries).
The 1968 Games were the third to be held in autumn, after the 1956 Games in Melbourne and the 1964 Games in Tokyo. The Mexican Student Movement of 1968 happened concurrently and the Olympic Games were correlated to the government's repression.
Host city selection
On October 18, 1963, at the 60th IOC Session in Baden-Baden, West Germany, Mexico City finished ahead of bids from Detroit, Buenos Aires and Lyon to host the Games.
Olympic torch relay
The 1968 torch relay recreated the route taken by Christopher Columbus to the New World, journeying from Greece through Italy and Spain to San Salvador Island, Bahamas, and then on to Mexico. American sculptor James Metcalf, an expatriate in Mexico, won the commission to forge the Olympic torch for the 1968 Summer Games.

Mexican wine
Mexican wine and wine making began with the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, when they brought vines from Europe to modern day Mexico, the oldest wine-growing region in the Americas. Although there were indigenous grapes before the Spanish conquest, the Spaniards found that Spanish grapevines also did very well in the colony of New Spain (Mexico) and by the 17th century wine exports from Spain to the New World fell. In 1699, Charles II of Spain prohibited wine making in Mexico, with the exception of wine for Church purposes. From then until Mexico’s Independence, wine was produced in Mexico only on a small scale. After Independence, wine making for personal purposes was no longer prohibited and production rose, especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many other European immigrant groups helped with the comeback of wine in Mexico. However, the Mexican Revolution set back wine production, especially in the north of the country. Wine production in Mexico has been rising in both quantity and quality since the 1980s, although competition from foreign wines and 40% tax on the product makes competing difficult within Mexico. Mexico is not traditionally a wine-drinking country, but rather prefers beer, tequila and mezcal. Interest in Mexican wine, especially in the major cities and tourists areas (along with the introduction into the US on a small scale), has grown along with Mexican wines’ reputation throughout the world. Many Mexican companies have received numerous awards. Various wine producers from Mexico have won international awards for their products.

Mexico (barque)
Mexico was a barque that was wrecked off Southport on 9 December 1886. She was repaired only to be lost in Scottish waters in 1890.
Shipwreck
On 9 December 1886, the Mexico was on its way from Liverpool to Guayaquil, Ecuador when it was caught in a storm. Lifeboats were launched from Lytham, St. Annes and Southport to rescue the crew. The Lytham lifeboat Charles Biggs, which was on her maiden rescue, rescued the twelve crew but both the St. Annes lifeboat Laura Janet and the Southport lifeboat Eliza Fernley were capsized, and 27 of the 29 crew were drowned. To date, this is the worst loss of RNLI crew in a single incident.Mexico came ashore off Birkdale, opposite the Birkdale Palace Hotel.
Aftermath
Sixteen women were left widows, and fifty children lost their fathers. Queen Victoria and the Kaiser sent their condolences to the families of the lifeboatmen. An appeal was launched to raise money to provide a memorial to those killed, and the organisation by Sir Charles Macara of the first street collections in Manchester in 1891 led to the first flag days. The disaster has a permanent memorial in Lytham St. Annes lifeboat house. An appeal has been launched by the Lytham St. Annes Civic Society for the restoration of four of the memorials.

Mexico (novel)
Mexico is a novel by James A. Michener published in 1992.
The main action of Mexico takes place in Mexico over a three-day period in the fictional city of Toledo in 1961. The occasion is the annual bullfighting festival, at which two matadors — one an acclaimed hero of the sport, the other a scrapping contender — are prepared to fight to the death for fame and glory.
Through the memories of the book's narrator, Norman Clay, an American journalist of Spanish and Indian descent, Michener provides plenty of historical background, including a depiction of the gruesome human sacrifices that took place hundreds of years before on the city's periphery. The story focuses on bullfighting, but also provides great insight into Mexican culture. The reader follows the bulls from their breeding to their "sorting" to the pageantry and spectacle of the bullring, where picadors and banderilleros prepare the bull for the entrance of the matador with his red cape. The author creates one of his most memorable characters in the bullfighting "critic" Leon Ledesma, a flamboyant sportswriter who elevates bullfighting into an art form through his grandiloquent essays.

I am sharing in a better quality due to recent events. Věra Čáslavská support of the Czechoslovak democratization movement and her opposition to the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, she took this protest to the world stage by quietly looking down and away while the Soviet national anthem was played during the medal ceremonies for the balance beam and floor exercise event finals. While Čáslavská's actions were applauded by her compatriots, they resulted in her becoming a persona non grata in the new regime. Running at altitude all three medalists had already lowered the OR for the distance in the earlier rounds ,but it was Smith with a stunning home straight that became the first man to smash the 20 second barrier in the final.A fast finishing Norman grabbed second place on the line in 20.06,which is still an Australian record for the distance.Following the "black power salute" on the podium Smith and Carlos were sent home after the IOC ,pushed by it's President, Avery Brundage(of dubious political leaning),threatened to send the entire USA team back if the two athletes were not banned from the Olympic village. 38 years after they had stood on the podium together Smith and Carlos acted as Peter Normans pallbearers, who died of a heart attack ,aged 64.

Richard Douglas ("Dick") Fosbury was born on 6 March 1947 in Portland, Oregon. He is widely credited with inventing the Fosbury flop, a back-first jumping technique that revolutionised the high jump. He developed the flop aged 16 after finding the standard techniques difficult.
At the time, jumpers took off from their inside foot and swung their outside foot up and over the bar. Fosbury's technique was to race up to the bar at great speed and take off from his right (or outside) foot. Then he twisted his body so that he went over the bar head first with his back to the bar.
His technique truly changed the sport at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Despite scepticism from judges and coaches, Fosbury cleared every height up to 2.22 metres without a miss and then achieved a personal record of 2.24 metres to win the gold medal. By 1980, 13 of the 16 Olympic finalists were using the Fosbury flop.

Relive the historic moment the USA's Jim Hines broke the 10 second barrier in the men's 100m event at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games.
When he watched Bob Hayes' stellar performance at the Tokyo 1964 Games, Jim Hines got inspired to repeat his idol's feat four years later, at the Mexico Games. And the 1968 Olympics were a great stage to do so. For the first time in Olympic history, an electronic chronometer was used alongside the traditional manual timekeepers.
As Hines left the blocks in the men's 100 metres final, he started behind some of his fellow competitors who were known as better starters. Between the 50 to 60 metres mark of the race, he took the lead not to let go of it until the finish line. The American had just set a new Olympic record, waiting only for the official confirmation.
Though originally clocked manually at 9.9s, it was later confirmed through the new electronic system as 9.95s. Jim Hines was now not only the "fastest man on earth" but also the first one to break the 10 seconds barrier at the Olympic Games.

John Stephen Akhwari is a former long-distance runner from Tanzania who specialized mainly in marathons. His most notable performance took place at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, where, like many other athletes, he had to contend with the extreme conditions of heat and altitude. At kilometer 19, he fell after a collision with other runners. Despite a shoulder injury and the need to bandage his right leg, he fought his way to the finish. There he was the last runner to finish in 57th place with a time of 3:25:17 hours, over an hour behind the winner Mamo Wolde and almost twenty minutes behind the penultimate runner. When documentary filmmaker Bud Greenspan asked him why he hadn't given up, he replied with the famous words: "My country didn't send me 5,000 miles to start, but to finish."
This race made Akhwari a legend.

Nearly 2,500 hectares (6,200 acres) are planted to grapes in Mexico. Principal white wine grapes include Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, and reds include all five Bordeaux varietals plus Nebbiolo, Grenache, Tempranillo, Dolcetto, Syrah and petite Sirah.
This is the most varied wine region in the world actually. It is home to 140 different grape varietals. There are no government restrictions like Italy, France, and Spain when it comes to the grapes you can grow in specific regions. This allows the winemakers to be extremely creative. They are making blends here that you would never see anywhere else, including in California.
This is indeed the most interesting wine region in the world. You'll find winemakers from France, Germany, Chile, Argentina, the United States, and of course Mexico.
Because of the very small production, you may not be able to find Mexican wine consistently in the United States. If you find it definitely try it!

The image of sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists during a medal ceremony at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City is an enduring image of silent protest. But the key to understanding it goes beyond the black-gloved fists. All three medal winners, including silver medalist Peter Norman of Australia, wore buttons that read “Olympic Project for Human Rights.” The Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR) was a coalition of prominent athletes formed in 1967 that threatened to boycott participating in the upcoming Olympic games, in order to draw attention to systemic racism in the United States. The group, led by professor Harry Edwards, ultimately voted to compete in the games and hold their demonstrations there, which led to the now-iconic display on the medal stand following the men’s 200-meter final. This act got Smith and Carlos kicked off the team, but left a lasting legacy on making political statements through sport.

Věra Čáslavská support of the Czechoslovak democratization movement and her opposition to the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, she took this protest to the world stage by quietly looking down and away while the Soviet national anthem was played during the medal ceremonies for the balance beam and floor exercise event finals. While Čáslavská's actions were applauded by her compatriots, they resulted in her becoming a persona non grata in the new regime. She was forced into retirement and for many years was denied the right to travel, work and attend sporting events.

One of the most memorable and historic moments in Olympic history as Dick Fosbury re-invents the high jump competition with the use of his Fosbury flop method instead of the classic scissors technique.

Richard Douglas ("Dick") Fosbury was born on 6 March 1947 in Portland, Oregon. He is widely credited with inventing the Fosbury flop, a back-first jumping technique that revolutionised the high jump. He developed the flop aged 16 after finding the standard techniques difficult.
At the time, jumpers took off from their inside foot and swung their outside foot up and over the bar. Fosbury's technique was to race up to the bar at great speed and take off from his right (or outside) foot. Then he twisted his body so that he went over the bar head first with his back to the bar.
His technique truly changed the sport at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Despite scepticism from judges and coaches, Fosbury cleared every height up to 2.22 metres without a miss and then achieved a personal record of 2.24 metres to win the gold medal. By 1980, 13 of the 16 Olympic finalists were using the Fosbury flop.

Running at altitude all three medalists had already lowered the OR for the distance in the earlier rounds ,but it was Smith with a stunning home straight that became the first man to smash the 20 second barrier in the final.A fast finishing Norman grabbed second place on the line in 20.06,which is still an Australian record for the distance.Following the "black power salute" on the podium Smith and Carlos were sent home after the IOC ,pushed by it's President, Avery Brundage(of dubious political leaning),threatened to send the entire USA team back if the two athletes were not banned from the Olympic village. 38 years after they had stood on the podium together Smith and Carlos acted as Peter Normans pallbearers, who died of a heart attack ,aged 64.

Relive the historic moment the USA's Jim Hines broke the 10 second barrier in the men's 100m event at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games.
When he watched Bob Hayes' stellar performance at the Tokyo 1964 Games, Jim Hines got inspired to repeat his idol's feat four years later, at the Mexico Games. And the 1968 Olympics were a great stage to do so. For the first time in Olympic history, an electronic chronometer was used alongside the traditional manual timekeepers.
As Hines left the blocks in the men's 100 metres final, he started behind some of his fellow competitors who were known as better starters. Between the 50 to 60 metres mark of the race, he took the lead not to let go of it until the finish line. The American had just set a new Olympic record, waiting only for the official confirmation.
Though originally clocked manually at 9.9s, it was later confirmed through the new electronic system as 9.95s. Jim Hines was now not only the "fastest man on earth" but also the first one to break the 10 seconds barrier at the Olympic Games.

John Stephen Akhwari is a former long-distance runner from Tanzania who specialized mainly in marathons. His most notable performance took place at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, where, like many other athletes, he had to contend with the extreme conditions of heat and altitude. At kilometer 19, he fell after a collision with other runners. Despite a shoulder injury and the need to bandage his right leg, he fought his way to the finish. There he was the last runner to finish in 57th place with a time of 3:25:17 hours, over an hour behind the winner Mamo Wolde and almost twenty minutes behind the penultimate runner. When documentary filmmaker Bud Greenspan asked him why he hadn't given up, he replied with the famous words: "My country didn't send me 5,000 miles to start, but to finish."
This race made Akhwari a legend.

1968 Summer Olympics
The 1968 Summer Olympics (Spanish: Juegos Olímpicos de Verano de 1968), officially known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event held in Mexico City, Mexico, in October 1968.
These were the first Olympic Games to be staged in Latin America and the first to be staged in a Spanish-speaking country. They were also the first Games to be held in a developing country (previously, all Olympic Games had been held in First World countries).
The 1968 Games were the third to be held in autumn, after the 1956 Games in Melbourne and the 1964 Games in Tokyo. The Mexican Student Movement of 1968 happened concurrently and the Olympic Games were correlated to the government's repression.
Host city selection
On October 18, 1963, at the 60th IOC Session in Baden-Baden, West Germany, Mexico City finished ahead of bids from Detroit, Buenos Aires and Lyon to host the Games.
Olympic torch relay
The 1968 torch relay recreated the route taken by Christopher Columbus to the New World, journeying from Greece through Italy and Spain to San Salvador Island, Bahamas, and then on to Mexico. American sculptor James Metcalf, an expatriate in Mexico, won the commission to forge the Olympic torch for the 1968 Summer Games.

Nearly 2,500 hectares (6,200 acres) are planted to grapes in Mexico. Principal white wine grapes include Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, and reds include all five Bordeaux varietals plus Nebbiolo, Grenache, Tempranillo, Dolcetto, Syrah and petite Sirah.
This is the most varied wine region in the world actually. It is home to 140 different grape varietals. There are no government restrictions like Italy, France, and Spain when it comes to the grapes you can grow in specific regions. This allows the winemakers to be extremely creative. They are making blends here that you would never see anywhere else, including in California.
This is indeed the most interesting wine region in the world. You'll find winemakers from France, Germany, Chile, Argentina, the United States, and of course Mexico.
Because of the very small production, you may not be able to find Mexican wine consistently in the United States. If you find it definitely try it!

Poursuivis par un bateau de la garde civile, deux narcotrafiquants ont décidé de foncer sur la plage de Melicena, à Sorvilán, au sud de l'Espagne. À leur arrivée sur la plage, après avoir heurté un baigneur, la foule de vacanciers s'est jeté sur l'un des trafiquants et l'a immobilisée. Le deuxième homme a été arrêté par la garde civile.
