Thousands of television and film writers who are part of the Writers Guild of America are in the middle of a historic strike. They're forming picket lines in front of studios, and productions in New York and Los Angeles and shutting down active sets. The last time they went on strike was 15 years ago — when streaming’s impact on the film and television industry was only just taking shape. This time around, they are striking for better residuals and rights against the looming threat of AI, among other concerns.
At the core of this dispute is streaming and how it's revolutionized the industry. Companies like Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, and more have given consumers an unprecedented array of films and TV shows and opened the door to new voices that don’t have to adhere to mainstream network formats. On the other hand, streaming has also changed how television gets produced, the role writers play, and how they get paid. We interviewed four television writers and showrunners about how streaming has changed how they work, how their incomes have taken a hit, and why it has become harder than ever to build a career.

After failing to reach a contract resolution with the studio association, more than 11,000 film and television writers remain on strike. Of the many topics under consideration in this year's Writers Guild of America contract discussions, one nascent technology has fueled dissent among the negotiators: artificial intelligence.
Since the last writers' strike in 2007, widespread consumer adoption of video streaming has exemplified how novel technologies can upheave the entertainment industry. Now, however, the leaders in the streaming space are dealing with the ballooning costs of high-output, high-quality content.
"Today, the only one we know of that is cashflow positive is Netflix," said Dan Rayburn, a streaming media analyst. "They've estimated they'll be about $3.5 billion of free cash flow this year. Every other company out there, if you think about it, is losing money. Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, losing billions and billions and billions of dollars a year."
As streaming companies scramble to nourish their bottom line, content is being removed from platforms, cutting off creators from being compensated.
Watch the video above for more on how AI is fueling the WGA's fight for a fair contract.

The 1988 Writers' Strike
The TV/movie writers' strike in 2007 directed attention to a 22-week strike by writers in 1988. This video has four news reports at various points during the strike. The 2007 strike seemed focused on new technologies for distribution such as DVDs. In contrast, the 1988 news reports mainly focus on TV networks vs. cable and first runs vs. reruns. Oddly, in the second clip, a major NBC executive refers to replacement writers hired by management as "scabs," a derogatory term more typically used by unions.

Hollywood’s long union history from 1960’s writers/actors strike, to 1988’s WGA picket to 2007 & now
Actors and writers have a long history of striking in Hollywood. Dating all the way back to the 1960 WGA and actors strikes, which SAG president Ronald Reagan ironically led the charge. Then in 1988, writers hit the picket lines again for 155 days - the longest strike in Hollywood history (likely to be surpassed by the current strike). The 1988 work stoppage laid the foundation for the next decade’s “spec-script boom,” where writers returned home from picket-lines to write screenplays on speculation that they would someday sell them after the strike ended. Will the same happen in Hollywood today?

Tuesday November 27th, 2007
Talks between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers resumed Monday, November 26. It is the first time the two sides formally sat at the bargaining table since the strike began on Nov. 4. Due to a mutually agreed upon media blackout, no details were released about the first day of talks. Picketing resumed on Monday at most major lots in Hollywood. Senior Editor Paul Jay visited the picket lines and spoke with some of the striking writers.

STORYLINE
Film and television writers resolved to put down their pens and take up picket signs on Monday, after last-ditch talks failed to avert a strike.
The first picket lines were set to appear on Monday morning at Rockefeller Centre in New York City, the headquarters of broadcaster NBC.
In Los Angeles, writers were planning to picket 14 studio locations in four-hour shifts from 9a.m to 5 p.m (1400GMT to 2200GMT) each day until a new deal is reached.
The contract between the 12-thousand member Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers expired on October 31.
Talks, which began earlier this year, failed to produce much progress on the writers' key demands for a bigger slice of DVD profits and revenue from the distribution of films and TV shows over the Internet.
David Dobkin, director "Fred Clause" told AP Television it was all "about people cutting up the pie properly so that everybody gets to benefit from their work," he said.
"It's always been a hard road for writers and it's a hard time also for the business, but there's always a compromise, we're a democracy, we know how to do this. Or we used to," he added.
Writers and producers gathered for negotiations on Sunday at the request of a federal mediator.
Producers said writers refused a request to "stop the clock" on the planned strike while talks continued.

As television series close down, writers start to feel like part of the U.S. labor movement
