The Cold War: Crash Course US History #37
In which John Green teaches you about the Cold War, the decades-long conflict between the USA and the USSR. The Cold War was called cold because of the lack of actual fighting, but this is inaccurate. There was plenty of fighting, from Korea to Viet Nam to Afghanistan, but we'll get into that stuff next week. This week we'll talk about how the Cold War started. In short, it grew out of World War II. Basically, the Soviets occupied Eastern Europe and the US-supported western Europe. This setup would spill across the world, with client states on both sides. It's all in the video. You should just watch it.

How Did the Cold War Happen?
The United Starts and Russia have had an interesting past, sometimes friends, and sometimes foes. When the USA helped the Soviet Union against Germany, that was a temporary alliance, and after Hitler was defeated, the alliance was off. In today's video we look back on what started the Cold War.

The Cold War: Seven Minutes to Midnight | Documentary
The end of the Second World War was met with riotous jubilation at the victory over the Axis powers and with the establishment of the United Nations there was the dream of a new world order of freedom, prosperity and above all peace. Even the advent of the Atom Bomb, the decisive weapon that ended the war was celebrated for it was believed it was so powerful it would render warfare obsolete.
And yet even before the guns fell silent, concerned whispers were being shared in the halls of power regarding the capitalist Allies of the west and the communists in the east who hitherto had been united against Fascism. With there no longer being a common enemy to unite them, age-old rivalries and fears began to re-emerge.
The western Allies of America, Britain, Canada and France had not forgotten...

1945-1953 From World War to Cold War
At the outset of the Yalta Conference on February 4, 1945, the «Big Three» were all optimistic: victory was in no doubt, and the accord that they had achieved seemed likely to preserve the values they had fought for.
However, in just a few months, nothing would remain of this agreement apart from irreconcilable differences. United in war, the Allies would reveal themselves as divided and rivals in peace. How can such a rapid failure of a real effort at entente be explained? With the Yalta Conference in 1945 to 1953, discover a new world order drawn up by three men, looking for a lasting peace... that would lead inevitably to the Cold War.
Combining archive footage, photographs, original letters and unique testimonies, these two episodes revisit this crucial period in History. A full imme...

At the end of WW2, the Cold War had begun. From Stalin to Reagan, from the Nuclear Arms Race to The Cuban Missile Crisis, from the Berlin Wall to Vietnam and Korea, this is the story of the Cold War. The World would lay divided between two great superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. It would not be a conventional war, with the two sides never directly fighting, instead, it would be an ideological battle between communism and capitalism, the East vs the West and the resulting struggle for ideological influence and power.
Both sides would stockpile nuclear weapons, with questions over how to use, control and eliminate them becoming central to the conflict. The conflict would come to an end when Gorbachev’s reforms, Glasnost and Perestroika began to unravel the Soviet Union itself.
Reformers began to emerge across Eastern Europe, and in 1989 a string of democratic revolutions would see nearly every communist government ousted from power. On November 9th, the most symbolic monument of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, would come down, and Germany itself would be reunited the following year. The Soviet Union would collapse in 1991, dissolving into 15 independent states, a surprisingly quick and bloodless conclusion to the Cold War, a conflict which had dominated international relations for over 40 years.

In which John Green teaches you about the Cold War, the decades-long conflict between the USA and the USSR. The Cold War was called cold because of the lack of actual fighting, but this is inaccurate. There was plenty of fighting, from Korea to Viet Nam to
Afghanistan, but we'll get into that stuff next week. This week we'll talk about how the Cold War started. In short, it grew out of World War II. Basically, the Soviets occupied Eastern Europe and the US-supported western Europe. This setup would spill across the world, with client states on both sides. It's all in the video. You should just watch it.

The United Starts and Russia have had an interesting past, sometimes friends, and sometimes foes. When the USA helped the Soviet Union against Germany, that was a temporary alliance, and after Hitler was defeated, the alliance was off. In today's video we look back on what started the Cold War.

The western Allies of America, Britain, Canada and France had not forgotten that the Soviet leader Stalin had worked with the Nazis to carve up eastern Europe before Germany invaded Poland in 1939. They were also concerned about Stalin’s refusal to surrender his grip on territories in eastern Europe which the Red Army had liberated and his land grab in Asia during his last-minute intervention in the Pacific theatre against Japan.
Stalin himself, as paranoid as ever, was convinced that the western allies deliberately delayed the D-Day landings in order to bleed the Soviet Union of its people in an effort to weaken the vast country. The fact that American soldiers had fought in the Russian Civil War against the Communists in 1919 only helped fuel his belief that after Napoleon and Hitler, the next leader to take a massive army into the Soviet Union would be American.
With both America and the Soviet Union having suffered devastating surprise attacks in the war, they were both determined that it would never happen again. They readied their armies to fight what would prove to be one of the most abstract conflicts in history – the Cold War.

The Cold War Complete History Overview goes through the entirety of the Cold War era starting with the end of World War 2 until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and Soviet-Afghan War, it's all here and more!

The video picks up after Germany's surrender, as the cracks begin to form between the Western Allied democracies and the communist USSR, as an Iron Curtain descends across Europe along with the division of West Germany and East Germany and the emergence of NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
We then move on to Asia, where the Chinese Civil War resumes between the Communists and Nationalists. From there, we move onto the borders of China, as we explore the Korean War and Indochina War in Vietnam.
Back in Europe, the 1950s and 60s bring us the Eisenhower-Khrushchev era, the Hungarian Revolution, the infamous Kitchen Debate, the Sino-Soviet Split, the Berlin Wall, the emergence of the Third World, or Non-Aligned Movement, Castro's Cuban Revolution, and the Cuban Missile Crisis under Kennedy.
The last chapter deals with President Johnson and the Vietnam War, President Nixon's diplomacy with China and Brezhnev, the Soviet invasion of
Afghanistan and the Reagan-Gorbachev era, culminating in the Revolutions of 1989, and the eventual dissolution of the Soviet Union.

A full immersion into postwar years and an emerging new world order.

The Cold War Explained From Beginning to End in One Minute: Causes/Effects, Timeline and Outcome

Cold War II: Niall Ferguson on The Emerging Conflict With China | Uncommon Knowledge
Recorded on April 24, 2023.
Niall Ferguson is the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and the author of numerous books, including Doom: The Politics of Catastrophe and Kissinger, 1923–1968: The Idealist. In this conversation, we cover the conflict over Taiwan: why it’s a cold war, when it started, how to avoid allowing it to become a hot war, and how to de-escalate and even win it. Along the way, Ferguson discusses the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the role of the United States and Western Europe in both conflicts, and how we can avoid once again living under the threat of nuclear war as we did in Cold War I.

The cold war between the USA and its allies and the USSR and its allies definitely shaped the post-WW2 period. In one minute, I'll analyze the causes and effects of the cold war, walk you through the cold war timeline and of course see what lessons humanity should learn from the outcome of the cold war.
From beginning to end, the cold war told us things we should never forget. Unfortunately, humans aren't exactly amazing at that. To this day, most people still don't have a meaningful understanding of the causes + effects of the cold war and the main risk should be obvious: those who don't understand history are doomed to repeat it.

SUMMARY
=======
A cold war is a state of conflict between nations that does not involve direct military action but is pursued primarily through economic and political actions, propaganda, acts of espionage or proxy wars waged by surrogates. This term is most commonly used to refer to the Soviet-American Cold War. The surrogates are typically states that are "satellites" of the conflicting nations, i.e., nations allied to them or under their political influence. Opponents in a cold war will often provide economic or military aid, such as weapons, tactical support or military advisors, to lesser nations involved in conflicts with the opposing country.

At the end of WW2, the World would lay divided between two great superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. Both sides would stockpile nuclear weapons, with questions over how to use, control and eliminate them becoming central to the conflict. From Stalin to Regan, from the CIA to the KGB, from the Berlin Wall to Hiroshima and Chernobyl, this is the story of The Cold War.
