1838 Mormon War in Missouri: How the State tried to eradicate the Mormons & drive them from Missouri
Executive Order #44 stated the Mormons in Missouri were to be treated as enemies and driven from the state. So what happen? How did these two groups of settlers get to the point of one of them being banished from the state?
I go to historical sights that I have never been to and have little knowledge of. I go and learn ---and hopefully you learn something right along with me. This is what my channel is about - getting out, exploring and learning. I go and learn the history while I am there!
I do try very hard to pronounce things properly, but sometimes I don't. Please forgive me :)

The Utah War: How “Buchanan’s Blunder” almost sparked a civil war. Ep. 185
In 1857, rumors circulated that the “Mormons” out West in Utah Territory were in a state of rebellion against the United States. Instead of investigating the claims, President James Buchanan sent an army to Utah to replace Governor Brigham Young, and to restore peace. In this video, Dave explores how the Latter-day Saints responded to the incoming army - and avoided an early civil war in the process.

Missouri Vs. Religion? Missouri Mormon War 1838
This is the first in a series covering aspects before the American Cvil War. Disclaimer I'm not mormon, I'm not that familiar with Mormonism, if I got anything wrong please tell me and I'll fix it. I did not make this episode to insult anyone's religious beliefs.
A companion to the series covering the American Civil Week By Week. It's made by a single person (me) who edits, acts and writes the production. Hatred and Prejudice is not something that is accepted on this channel. If you believe that I have made any statements or done any actions that constitute bigotry please know that it is not my intention. I wish only to inform not insult.

I also recommend the book “Rough Stone Rolling,” by Richard Bushman, which is excellently well-researched.
Notes:
-Why were things so tense between Missourians and Latter-day Saints? 5 reasons listed here: https://bit.ly/2CEBgLd
-Bushman mentions that Latter-day Saint forces moved into Gallatin, Millport, and Splawn’s Ridge. According to a directory of Daviess County “Towns, Villages, and Hamlets Past and Present,” Splawn’s Ridge was located “about 3 miles east of Gallatin, and near what afterward became the town of Millport...”
-“Mormon strategy went beyond protection of their own people to attacking suspected mobbers. Mormon militia were to confiscate the property of hostile Daviess citizens and force them to move, thus destroying the vigilantes’ home base. Enemies only were to be attacked. The confiscated property was to be deposited in the bishop’s storehouse for the use of Mormons who had suffered losses in earlier battles.” -Bushman, pg. 362.
-Some Saints claimed that mobbers were burning their own houses/buildings just to make the Saints look bad. Maybe, but I doubt it. It’s generally accepted that throughout the “war,” both parties pillaged and burned each other’s stuff. The injustice in it all is that the Saints were the ones the law came down hard on, while the mobs of Missourrians (the cause of the Saints’ desperation) were free to do as they pleased.
-”On November 1, Far West surrendered. The soldiers searched the city for firearms, threatening and ridiculing the Saints. A few days later, a force dispatched to Adam-ondi-Ahman accepted the surrender of the mormon leaders, who followed Joseph’s instructions not to resist. The Mormon men came one by one to a table where they signed away their property to the state of Missouri while militia men stood by and struck anyone who protested. By this time the Mormons were willing to go. Marauders were attacking outlying farms, molesting women, whipping men, and killing animals. [Albert] Rockwood reported that ‘orders from the governor are to exterminate the Mormons, the Brethren are hunted as wild game and shot down several have been shot in site of the City, womin [sic] are ravished and houses rifled, one woman has been killed within less than 2 miles of this City, we are here as captives strictly guarded by the Malitia [sic] no person is allowed to go out of the City.’” -Richard Bushman, Rough Stone Rolling, pg. 367.

Notes:
— President Buchanan also had political motivation to address the “Mormon problem” out west. 1856 was an election year. One of the selling points for the Republican party was that their candidate would oppose what were referred to as the “twin relics of barbarism,” namely slavery and polygamy. The Democratic party supported slavery, but did not support polygamy. So, once the Democratic candidate (James Buchanan) won the election, he felt pressure to at least do something to address those polygamous Mormons out west.
— There is some historical disagreement on the date when the riders brought news of the incoming army and when Brigham became apprised to the situation. See footnote #52 here: https://bit.ly/3B0XBNU
— The Saints didn’t dislike federal appointees just because they weren’t members of their faith. For example, the Saints mourned the deaths of both Judge Reed and Judge Shaver. “During their residence in the Territory, by their uprightness as judges and their deportment as men, they had endeared themselves to the whole community….” Source: “History of Utah” 1:543, by Orson F. Whitney.
— William Drummond wrote in his resignation letter, “I do believe that, if there was a man put in office as Governor of that Territory, who is not a member of the Church … and he supported with a sufficient military aid, much good would result from such a course.” Source: "History of Utah," 1:582, Orson F. Whitney
— The Saints considered William Drummond unfair and immoral. Even one of his fellow federally-appointed chief justices (John Kinney) thought Drummond should be removed from office.
— Brigham Young is said to have made the following stark warning to Buchanan’s peace commissioners. However, I have yet to track down the *original* source for these remarks, so take them with a grain of salt.
“Now let me say to you Peace Commissioners, we are willing those troops should come into our country, but not to stay in our city. They may pass through it, if needs be, but must not quarter less than forty miles from us.
"If you bring your troops here to disturb this people, you have got a bigger job than you or President Buchanan have any idea of. Before the troops reach here, this city will be in ashes, every tree and shrub will be cut to the ground, and every blade of grass that will burn shall be burned.
"Our wives and children will go to the canyons, and take shelter in the mountains; while their husbands and sons will fight you; and, as God lives, we will hunt you by night and by day, until your armies are wasted away. No mob can live in the homes we have built in these mountains. That's the program, gentlemen, whether you like it or not. If you want war, you can have it; but, if you wish peace, peace it is; we shall be glad of it."
