.22 Short is a variety of .22 caliber (5.6mm) rimfireammunition. Developed in 1857 for the first Smith & Wessonrevolver, the .22 rimfire was the first American metallic cartridge. The original loading was a 29 or 30gr (0.066 or 0.069oz; 1.879 or 1.944g) bullet and 4gr (0.0091oz; 0.2592g) of black powder. The original .22 rimfire cartridge was renamed .22 Short with the introduction of the .22 Long in 1871.
Developed for self defense, the modern .22 Short, though still used in a few pocket pistols and mini-revolvers, is mainly used as a quiet round for practice by the recreational shooter. The .22 Short was popularly used in shooting galleries at fairs and arcades; several rifle makers produced "gallery" models for .22 Short exclusively. Due to its low recoil and good inherent accuracy, the .22 Short was used for the Olympic 25m rapid fire pistol event until 2004, and they were allowed in the shooting part of modern pentathlon competitions before they switched to air pistols.

.22 Shorts - Don't let their cuteness fool you
Filmed safely at a proper shooting range, we compare the .22 short to the popular CCI Mini-Mag in .22 LR. All the tests were done through a Ruger 10/22 with an 18.5" barrel, (we intended to use the Speedmaster but the rear sight is damaged and gave us funky accuracy). The OLD .22 shorts proved to be very reliable while the 15 year old Mini-mags, despite always being store in a dry cool place, were already showing signs of going "bad". We had one squib (bullet did not leave the barrel) and one shot with very low velocity in the tests. We did chrono a number of the CCIs and averaged around 1240 FPS. Introduced in 1857 as the first American metallic cartridge ever produced, the .22 Short was an entirely self-contained cartridge that was moisture resistant and more quickly reloaded than other firearms of the era. It was a rimfire cartridge, meaning that the priming compound was applied inside the rim of the cartridge, which ignited the powder charge held in the case.
Smith and Wesson's first revolver was chambered for the .22 Short, which was designed to be used as a self-defense cartridge – a popular use for soldiers in the Civil War. The .22 Short remained popular after the war and was chambered in a growing variety of rifles and small pistols. Many youngsters of the late 19th century and early to mid 20th century received .22 Short rifles as their first gun. While it was eventually replaced by the more popular .22 LR, there are still dedicated fans who have kept the place of this cartridge secure in the world of shooting.
The .22 Short saw a great deal of use in shooting galleries, which were widespread from the late 19th century until the mid 20th century. With a very mild report, no recoil, and sufficient accuracy, the .22 Short had a reputation for being able to take small game and control pests.
Several manufacturers have produced rifles for the .22 Short – including Marlin, Winchester and Remington. The rifles were most commonly made as pump and lever action guns, with single shot rifles a close third. Browning produced a semi-automatic rifle for the .22 Short, and Winchester accepted special orders for bolt action rifles that fired the .22 Short.
A great cartridge, the .22 Short shoots accurately and quietly, and has a nearly imperceptible recoil, especially when firing subsonic rounds. This makes it a good cartridge for first time shooters, and also a fun plinker. The .22 Short is one of the great almost-forgotten rounds!

It was surprising how the 60+ year old shorts held up and proved to be have the same potency as they did leaving the factory, probably due to the wax coating. I'm sure they didn't intend for the rounds to be functional for so long, but the BIG surprise was how powerful the shorts actually were.

After reading several requests in regards to the .22 Short video I made a few years ago, I decided to revisit this fine little cartridge. I will be going over the performance and long history of the .22 short in brief detail. Testing a few different loadings and terminal impact are also covered in this video. If you are interested in the .22 rimfire, then this will be an enjoyable video for you.
Poboyspecial wanted to retest the Remington 22 short against the new zombie skull. We wanted to find out if it would penetrate a skull and do some real zombie damage.
People have underestimated the 22 short, so why not test it.

.22 Short is a variety of .22 caliber (5.6mm) rimfireammunition.
