Tenmu's reign lasted from 673 until his death in 686.
Traditional narrative
Tenmu was the youngest son of Emperor Jomei and Empress Saimei, and the younger brother of the Emperor Tenji. His name at birth was Prince Ōama (大海人皇子:Ōama no ōji). He was succeeded by Empress Jitō, who was both his niece and his wife.
During the reign of his elder brother, Emperor Tenji, Tenmu was forced to marry several of Tenji's daughters because Tenji thought those marriages would help to strengthen political ties between the two brothers. The nieces he married included Princess Unonosarara, today known as the Empress Jitō, and Princess Ōta. Tenmu also had other consorts whose fathers were influential courtiers.
How does Emperor Tenmu make himself a god?
IMPORTANT: I may have focused too much on the propaganda aspect of the Nihon Shoki and Kojiki (and there is indeed plenty of propaganda), but I don't want to leave the impression that the texts were wholly invented. Many of the historical events are considered fairly reliable, and much of the myths were written down from oral tradition rather than invented out of thin air.

Unveiling the Mystique: A Deep Dive into the Ancient and Modern Japan's Emperor
The Emperor of Japan, or the Tenno, acts as a ceremonial figurehead under Japan's constitution. This symbolic role stems from the country's history as a constitutional monarchy. The Japanese Imperial Family is believed to be the oldest hereditary monarchy worldwide, with roots extending over a thousand years. The current Emperor, Naruhito, is the 126th, succeeding his father, Emperor Akihito, in 2019. The emperor's duties are predominantly ceremonial, such as opening the Diet, Japan's parliament, and participating in Shinto religious ceremonies. Additionally, the emperor and the imperial family play an essential role in public and diplomatic events, both domestically and abroad. Despite their ceremonial status, the Imperial Family represents national unity and continuity, holding a special...

Yakushi-ji Temple, The Emperor Tenmu, Nara / 薬師寺 天武天皇 奈良

Yakushi-ji Temple was constructed by Emperor Tenmu in the late 7th century for the recovery of the emperor's sick wife. One of Japan's oldest temples, Yakushiji has a strictly symmetric layout, with the main hall and lecture hall standing on a central axis, flanked by two pagodas.
The main hall was rebuilt in the 1970s after being destroyed by fire and houses a Yakushi trinity, a masterpiece of Japanese Buddhist art. The East Pagoda is the temple's only structure to have survived the many fires that have beset the temple over the years, and dates from 730. It appears to have six stories, but is in fact only truly three-storied, like the West Pagoda.
Genjo-sanzoin's Octagonal Hall
The Genjo-sanzoin Garan is a recently built complex located slightly north of the main complex area. Constructed in 1991, the complex is dedicated to the Chinese monk Genjo-sanzo, who lived in the 7th century and is famous for his extensive travels to India and Central Asia. Yakushiji is the head temple of the Hosso Sect of Japanese Buddhism, upon which Genjo-sanzo's teachings had a profound influence.
The main building at Genjo-sanzoin Garan is a central octagonal hall, in which some of Genjo-sanzo's remains are enshrined. Behind the octagonal hall is a building displaying works of Hirayama Ikuo, one of Japan's most celebrated painters who passed away in 2009. The paintings depict scenes of Genjo-sanzo's journeys, which have inspired Hirayama's work. Unfortunately, however, the complex is closed about half the year (see details below).

Despite their ceremonial status, the Imperial Family represents national unity and continuity, holding a special place in many Japanese people's hearts. They serve as a bridge to the past and symbolize enduring traditions within Japan's rapidly evolving society.
