The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is a 9-mile (14.5km) long heritage railway in Derbyshire. The headquarters of the railway centre on Wirksworth station, and services operate in both directions between Wirksworth and Duffield and from Wirksworth to Ravenstor.
From April 2011 onward, passengers are now able to board and alight heritage services at Duffield where in recent years a station platform (3) has been re-constructed. Heritage services are timed to connect with East Midlands Trains Nottingham - Derby - Matlock service at the adjacent Duffield Network Rail platforms and therefore it is now possible for passengers to travel to and from Wirksworth by train from anywhere on the national network.
The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is named after the River Ecclesbourne and the track follows the river from its source to its confluence with the River Derwent at the Derbyshire village of Duffield.
Despite being a branch in itself, there is also a separate 1⁄2 mile (0.80km) branch operating from Platform 3 at Wirksworth Station up a 1 in 27 gradient incline to Ravenstor (for the National Stone Centre and the High Peak Trail, respectively).
Shottle Park was one of the seven parks within Duffield Frith. The gate at its south east corner is still known as Shottle Gate. To the south was the much smaller Postern Park. The present day parish is known as Shottle and Postern.
Whilst some way out of the village itself, Shottle has its own railway station - called Shottle after Shottle Hall which is nearby. The station, which is on the Wirksworth Branch, was closed in 1947 to passengers and the building is owned by Peak Oil Ltd. The railway line is being reopened to passengers as the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.
Wirksworth is a market town in Derbyshire, England, with a population of over 5,000.
Wirksworth is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. Within it is the source of the River Ecclesbourne. The town was granted its market charter by Edward I in 1306. The market is held every Tuesday in the market square. St Mary's Church is believed to date from about AD 653.
Historically, Wirksworth developed as a centre for lead mining and later of stone quarrying.
Many of the institutions in the area have connections with the Gell family, of Hopton Hall, whose most famous member was Sir John Gell, 1st Baronet, who fought on Parliament's side in the Civil War. One of his predecessors, Anthony Gell, founded the local grammar school, and one of his successors, Phillip Gell, opened the curiously named Via Gellia (possibly named in allusion to the Roman Via Appia), a road from the family's lead mines around Wirksworth to the smelter in Cromford. Today, Anthony Gell School is named after Anthony Gell.

Ecclesbourne Valley Railway - 4th April 2024
The other day, I went to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. It was a great day, with the recently restored 'Duke' (not the lost engine!) in service, as well as a Class 14 named 'Eric.' Unfortunately, this diesel was in service due to a landslip at the southern end of the line, meaning trains can't currently run into Duffield station, and thus the locos can't run round. This is why Eric was out, top and tailing with 'The Duke' - it wasn't all bad, as only two minutes are cut off from the journey time due to the landslip's proximity to the terminus, and it allowed me to get some shots of 'Eric' at Idridgehay!

Wirksworth - Derbyshire (PART 1)
This weekend, we drove slightly to the north of England to Wirksworth Derbyshire. Interestingly, St. Mary's Church has kept ancient stone carving from the Anglo-Saxon period inside their church. We've found them quite funny because the carvings look like children drawings. No offence, I'm just being honest ^ ^'
We then walked up to the Green Hill to visit Star Disc and found the views very impressive along the way up. It was quite a long climb to the top. First thing we saw when we entered Stoney Wood was the very impressive star disc created by an artist name Aidan Shingler.
We took a walk further down and found also Orientation Disc, Calendar Stones, Chain Sculpture, Peace pole and Infinity loop. That was it for us that day. Please subscribe for our upcoming episodes.

Wirksworth is a market town in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire, England . Wirksworth is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. Within it is the source of the River Ecclesbourne. The town was granted a market charter by Edward I in 1306. The market is still held, every Tuesday in the market square. The parish church of St Mary's is believed to date from about AD 653.
Historically, Wirksworth developed as a centre for lead mining and later of stone quarrying. Many of the lead mines in the area were owned by the Gell family of nearby Hopton Hall, and their name is preserved in the Via Gellia, a main road to the north-west of the town, and in the Anthony Gell School.
The Wirksworth area may have been visited by Homo erectus as long as 150,000 years ago, during warm inter-glacial periods. An Acheulean handaxe from the Lower Paleolithic has been found at Hopton nearby. From other remains found in the county there would seem to have been human presence at least periodically until the Romans arrived. The Carboniferous limestone around Wirksworth has been extensively quarried through the town's history, resulting in several rock faces and cliffs in the hills that surround the town.
Districts of Wirksworth include Yokecliffe, Gorsey Bank, Bolehill, Mountford and Miller's Green. Bolehill, although technically a hamlet in its own right in Wirksworth's suburbs, is the oldest and most northern part of the town, while Yokecliffe is a fairly new estate in the western area of the town. Modern houses have recently been built in the Three Trees area and at the bottom of Steeple Grange, this housing estate is called Spring Close.
Within Wirksworth civil parish are 108 structures that are listed by Historic England for their historic or architectural interest. The Parish Church of St Mary is listed Grade I and eight structures (15 Market Place, 35 Green Hill, 1 Coldwell Street, Haarlem Mill, Wigwell Grange, the Red Lion Hotel, Gate House and the former grammar school) are Grade II*. Wirksworth Heritage Centre is just off Market Place in Crown Yard. The exhibition shows the history of Wirksworth from its prehistoric Dream Cave and woolly rhinos, through its Roman and lead mining histories, to the modern era. Other nearby attractions include the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, the Steeple Grange Light Railway and Peak District National Park. The study Wirksworth and Five Miles Around includes census information, notes on church monuments, accounts of crimes, church wardens' accounts, maps, a transcription of "Ince's pedigrees", monument inscriptions and old photographs, parish registers and wills.

This was a first visit to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway in a beautiful part of Derbyshire to help GB Productions who are producing a DVD for the railway. A small industrial loco and another railcar ran trips during the day to Ravenstor which linked the line with the High Peak Railway; one of the steepest standard gauge lines in operation.
Material: Bole Hill; Wirksworth yard, railcars at Ravenstor, Idgridgehay and Jebs Lane; 78019 at Wirksworth, Gorseybank, Windley, Duffield, Windley, near Ashleyhay and Callow Park.
We had a fantastic day out at Ecclesbourne Valley Railway's first ever 1940's weekend it was a really well organised event which was enjoyed by all. looking forward to next year!

Dashcam Footage in Wirksworth, Alfa Romeo Driver with a Spacesaver tyre pulls out last minute and on the wrong side of the road. He then over tkes the car in front of him.
From then on his driving isn't right and swerves a few times.
I did try and report this to Derbyshire police but after being on hold for 20 minutes, I gave up.
