Green Mountain is a common name for "The Peak", the highest point on Ascension Island, which has gained some fame for claims that it is one of very few large-scale artificial forests.
History and vegetation
Many early 19th-century accounts, including Charles Darwin's (July 1836), described the volcanic island as barren with very few plants, some of them endemic to the island, not to be found anywhere else. Scientists estimate the island's native vascular plants to be between 25 and 30 species, 10 of them endemic to Ascension (Ashmole 2000, Gray et al. 2005). This impoverished flora is a consequence of the age of the island (only 1 million years old) and isolation (over 1,500 kilometres (930mi) - from any major landmass). Then, in 1843, the British plant collector Joseph Dalton Hooker visited the island with Sir James Clark Ross's Antarctica expedition. Hooker proposed a plan to plant the island with vegetation to attempt to increase rainfall and make life more bearable for the garrison that was stationed there (see Duffey 1964). Crucially he saw the appointment of a farm superintendent as being the key to success.
The Jebel Akhdar (Arabic:الجبل الأخضرal-Jabal al-Akhḍar, English: The Green Mountain) is a heavily forested, fertile upland area in northeastern Libya. It is located in the modern Shabiyahs or Districts of Derna, Jabal al Akhdar, and Marj.
Geography
The Jebel Akhdar consists of a mountainous plateau rising to an altitude of 500 metres (1,600ft), cut by several valleys and wadis. It lies northeast of Benghazi and south of Derna and the Mediterranean Sea. The region is one of the very few forested areas of Libya, which taken as a whole is one of the least forested countries on Earth. It is the wettest part of Libya, receiving some 600 millimetres (24in) of precipitation annually. The high rainfall contributes to the area's large forests containing Chammari, and enables rich fruit, potato, and cereal agriculture, something of a rarity in an arid country like Libya.
The city of Bayda is the capital of Jabal al Akdhar District and one of the region's largest cities.
The largest city and capital, Tripoli, is located in western Libya and contains over one million of Libya's six million people. The other large city is Benghazi, which is located in eastern Libya.
Libya has been inhabited by Berbers since the late Bronze Age. The Phoenicians established trading posts in western Libya, and Ancient Greek colonists established city-states in eastern Libya. Libya was variously ruled by Persians, Egyptians and Greeks before becoming a part of the Roman Empire. Libya was an early center of Christianity. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the area of Libya was mostly occupied by the Vandals until the 7th century, when invasions brought Islam and Arab colonization. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish Empire and the Knights of St John occupied Tripoli, until Ottoman rule began in 1551. Libya was involved in the Barbary Wars of the 18th and 19th centuries. Ottoman rule continued until the Italian occupation of Libya resulted in the temporary Italian Libya colony from 1911 to 1943. During the Second World War Libya was an important area of warfare in the North African Campaign. The Italian population then went into decline. Libya became an independent kingdom in 1951.
In Greek mythology, Libya, like Ethiopia or Scythia was one of the mythic outlands that encircled the familiar Greek world of the Hellenes and their "foreign" neighbors.
Personified as an individual, Libya was the daughter of Epaphus — King of Egypt and the son of Zeus and Io— and Memphis. Libya was ravished by the god Poseidon to whom she bore twin sons, Belus and Agenor. Some sources name a third son, named Lelex.
Roman mythology
In Roman mythology, Libya was the daughter of Epaphus, King of Egypt, and his wife Cassiopeia. She married Neptune, a foreigner of much power whose real name is unknown. Libya and Neptune had a son called Busiris, who became a brutal tyrant of Upper Egypt.
The territory that she ruled, Ancient Libya, and the country of modern day Libya are named after her.
The Latin name Libya (from Greek Λιβύη, Libyē) referred to the region west of the Nile Valley, generally corresponding to modern Northwest Africa. Its people were ancestors of the modern Berber people. Berbers occupied the area for thousands of years before the beginning of human records in Ancient Egypt. Climate changes affected the locations of the settlements.
More narrowly, Libya could also refer to the country immediately west of Egypt, viz. Marmarica (Libya Inferior) and Cyrenaica (Libya Superior). The Libyan Sea or Mare Libycum was the part of the Mediterranean south of Crete, between Cyrene and Alexandria.
In the Greek period the Berbers were known as Libyans, a Greek term for the inhabitants of northwest Africa. Their lands were called Libya, and extended from modern Morocco to the western borders of Ancient Egypt. Modern Egypt contains the Siwa Oasis, historically part of Libya, where the Berber Siwi language is still spoken.

At the bottom of Green Mountain William Deacon stands and stares into the rain With coal grey eyes yellow teeth and a face that shows the strain Of his fight against the people who would cut Green Mountain down To pave the way for what they say is a short cut in the town There's sugar in the gas tanks of the dozers and the graders and the mud The bridge they finished yesterday was washed away by last night's ragin' flood And the dam went out with dynamite stolen from the work crew's shack But the coal grey eyes of William Deacon never once looked back They're gonna move Green Mountain he can't stand in the way But William Deacon swears Green Mountain's gonna stay They're gonna move Green Mountain at least that's what they say But there it stands lookin' twice as big as it did yesterday Four hundred years and more the Deacon Clan has claimed Green Mountain as their own But the highway department don't have the sense to leave well enough alone With an iron hand he raised ten kids and taught 'em right from wrong And when trouble come the Deacon Clan can be mighty brave and strong They carried William Deacon's body down from old Green Mountain yesterday He was crushed by a rollin' gravel truck when he stepped out into the way The foreman frowned then said well now the work can start again But he forgot the family pride of all the Deacon Clan
