Mercia, or "the Border People" - was once the kingdom to the far west of the Anglo-Saxon's cultural reach. But through immense luck, and astute leadership, it almost became a different England, 200 years before England was united.

This episode covers the aftermath of the Roman withdrawal from Britain, focusing on the lack of sources for the centuries afterward and the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons. It begins with the legend of Hengist and Horsa, through the Northumbrian Golden Age all the way to the end of the Mercian supremacy in the wake of Offa's death.

The Last Pagan English King | Penda of Mercia
Penda of Mercia was the last Anglo-Saxon king to have lived his whole life as a pagan. He was also the most powerful king in the whole of Britain by the time of his death. And yet, neither he nor Mercia often get a whole lot of attention paid to them, instead overshadowed by other kings from other kingdoms, like Alfred of Wessex, Edwin of Northumbria, or Æthelbert of Kent. So today let's give Penda some love.

The Kingdom of Mercia lasted for more than five hundred years. Such a long period of time brought change to all aspects of Mercian life, and it is the role of history and this book to follow that change through the centuries. But it wasn’t just the kings and queens that changed. The events of the period resonated within social and cultural life, religious beliefs, artistic expression, and trade. Everything evolved under the patronage of Mercia, the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of England.

If you have access to a university library I'd recommend a read through Dorothy Whitelock's English Historical Sources 500-1042.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

How was England formed?
The existence of England is one that is often taken for granted and looked at far too scarcely. This may be due to the overshadowing history of the development of Great Britain and the United Kingdom, but nonetheless, in order for these unions to be formed, England had to already exist - and it actually has since 927 AD. So, how was England created, who claimed the land before the English, and how did it become the nation that we know today?...
