Education
Luigi Abete is the son of Campanian businessman Antonio Abete and Maria Basile. He graduated in law.[1]
Career
He was CEO of the family business operating in the graphic sector, founded by his father Antonio Abete in 1946. he became president of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL). He was also a member of the Board of directors of Carlo Erba Farmitalia.
He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Aspen Institute Italy. In 1978 he was elected president of the National Committee of Young Entrepreneurs. Subsequently he was elected vice president of Confindustria, a position he left in 1982 at the end of the second two-year period (maximum allowed by the Confindustria statute); he remained, however, in the Governing Council of Confindustria and in 1992 he was elected president, a position he held until 1996. Subsequently he held the presidency of the UIR, Union of Industrialists of Rome, until November 2008.[1]
In 1993 he was appointed president of the busines school LUISS Guido Carli University, a position he held until 2001, since January 1997, he was managing director of Ente Cinema SpA and since July of the same year he has been president of Cinecitta Studios. Since August 1998, he was president of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro. Since June 2009 he was President of Assonime (Association of Italian Joint-Stock Companies). He was also vice president of the ABI (Italian Banking Association).[1][2]
Trials
On 7 June 2006 he was brought to trial, as legal representative of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL) for the crime of usury, following a complaint submitted to the Public Prosecutor's Office by an entrepreneur. The charge for BNL and other banks was related to the application of interest rates higher than those set by law. On 7 November 2007 he was acquitted by the court of Palmi.[3]
In June 2015 he was sued with 12 BNL officials and managers by the Trani public prosecutor's office investigating risky derivative contracts given to its customers by various credit institutions.[4] In February 2019 with BNL he is sent to trial for usury by the court of Cagliari.[5]
Family
He is the brother of Giancarlo Abete, graphic entrepreneur and FIGC president. In the past he was married to Gabriella Rosito, with whom he had two children, Antonio and Caterina.
