Curious on Sorting Type
[edit]Just curious if there is a reason why the ships should be sorted by name instead of hull number. I recently made an edit that was undone in-part due to removing the sorting method and I'm just wondering if there is a reason why the list is sorted that way. - Not sure what you're trying to accomplish. Even with your edit, the ships were still listed by name, not by hull number. That said, did you check your edit afterward? Are you aware of the problem it caused?
- On another note, why would you want to go mucking about templates on your very first edit? I added a 'welcome' template to your user talk page. You should give it a read, it has a lot of useful information for new users. You should go through the links and follow the steps of each section. It's a good way to learn your way around. - In regard to what I was trying to accomplish, it was to revert the list to the order that it has been for years (by hull number). I inferred that the order the class should be listed in (that made the most sense to me and my peers) was in ascending order by hull number. This more closely matches the chronological order of the numerous flights of the class. Also, the user that made the sorting change mentioned that it was "not visible to reader" when in fact it was.
- I presumed that because you can 1. visually scan for a name or 2. use the "Find" feature on your web browser to single out a name, that the hull number (which cannot be found using either of those methods) would be the most plausible way to sort the list.
- I'm not quite sure what you mean by "Even with your edit, the ships were still listed by name, not by hull number", as the list was changed as far as I can tell, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
- Now yes, I'm aware of the large oversight on my part with the links being broken. There is no excuse, I should've checked more of the links.
- I'm aware that this is not a common first edit, but it was due to this page being a research tool that I have used for years, and not seeing sorting method change for a while, that I decided to do it myself.
- In hindsight, I should've inquired about the sorting change when it happened, and before I made an edit. That was my mistake.
- Thanks for welcome template, I will use that to familiarize myself with the editing tools and process in case a situation like this occurs again.
- Sorry the mistake, thank you for the help. RidgedDolphin1 (talk) 17:35, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
- A bit of an old topic but better late than never. This has caught my attention too. I've looked at class templates for other ship class articles—including GAs and FAs—and thus far all I've seen do indeed list their ships by hull number/chronological order rather than alphabetically. I can't think of any reason the ships should be listed alphabetically rather than by hull number. So unless there's some actual reason the ships are listed alphabetically, I'm in favor of listing them by hull number. Findingmoney100 (talk) 06:24, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Decided to WP:BEBOLD and remove the alphabetical sorting. Findingmoney100 (talk) 00:48, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
