Tempest Rising is a real-time strategy video game developed by Slipgate Ironworks and 2B Games, and published by 3D Realms[7] and Knights Peak.[8]
Gameplay
[edit]Tempest Rising is a traditional real-time strategy game in which players build bases, collect resources, and field armies against opposing human players or the AI. Its gameplay is reminiscent of that of the Command & Conquer series and other RTS games of the 90s and 2000s.[9][10][11] Two factions, the Global Defense Force (GDF) and the Tempest Dynasty, will be playable in the game's two campaigns, and a third faction has been confirmed to be available in multiplayer.[7]
Plot
[edit]Setting
[edit]Tempest Rising is set thirty-four years after an exacerbated Cuban Missile Crisis left significant areas of the Earth irradiated. The Global Defense Force (GDF) and the Tempest Dynasty struggle for control of the globe and a new mysterious energy source, the plant-like Tempest, which blooms in irradiated portions of the planet.[7]
Synopsis
[edit]In the year 1997, both the GDF and the Tempest Dynasty are at war with each other to secure Tempest fields around Europe. On the GDF side, Colonel Fischer enlists the aid of the GDF Commander while Brigadier General Aleks Molchalin of the Tempest Dynasty enlists the Dynasty General. Both sides perform their own operations throughout Europe. The GDF Commander is then suddenly ordered by the GDF Council to secure and investigate a mysterious temple in Iraq that may hold secrets related to the Tempest. Meanwhile, the Dynasty General is secretly contacted by Aleks' father Domovoy, who warns them that both the GDF and Dynasty have been infiltrated by a secret society called the Hawthorne Initiative, who already knew about the existence of Tempest and instigated the nuclear war to cultivate its growth. Domovoy orders the Dynasty General to detonate a nuclear bomb at the temple in Iraq, and the GDF Commander able to narrowly evacuate before it detonates.
However, a mysterious alien force called the Veti emerges from underground in the wake of the nuclear explosion, indiscriminately attacking both the GDF and Dynasty. Scientists from both sides theorize humanity and the Veti once went to war with each other in ancient times, with humanity narrowly being able to drive the Veti underground where they had been waiting for the right moment to return. In order to deal with the threat of the Veti, the GDF Commander heads to Spain to steal a Tempest Instability Missile from the Dynasty and use it against the Veti's main headquarters. Meanwhile, the Dynasty General is sent to Italy to seize a Veti temple so Domovoy can learn its secrets. The GDF Commander is able to successfully destroy the main Veti base, forcing them to retreat back underground and saving humanity.
In the aftermath, Domovoy resolves to study the data the Dynasty stole from the Veti while rebuilding the Dynasty from the shadows. However, Aleks privately contacts the Dynast General, expressing his distrust of his father. Meanwhile, Colonel Fisher warns the GDF Commander that even though they have defeated the Veti, they will certainly return so the GDF will need to be ready for them. The GDF Council then privately contacts the GDF Commander to offer them a deal.
Development
[edit]Developer Slipgate Ironworks is based in Denmark.[12] THQ Nordic announced Tempest Rising in August 2022.[13] A playable demo of the game was released in the following year.[14]
Tempest Rising was announced to be released on April 24, 2025[15], with advanced access for purchasers of the Deluxe Edition on April 17, 2025. However, due to a publishing error purchasers of the standard edition of the game also received access, and the following day the publishers retroactively declared April 17 the release day rather than correct the error.[1]
