Lungfishopolis?

[edit]

Somebody please think of a better way to put that. There are no bathyspheres in Lungfishopolis. Lungfishopolis itself is the mind of the Lungfish. The bathysphere is just a way to get to the bottom of the Lake. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.54.92.7 (talk) 21:46, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article copied?

[edit]

The previous unsigned remark by someone using a computer in Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A. does seem to be correct in that one or the other articles is a direct copy of the other. Did the Absolute Astronomy site copy from the Wikipedia or the other way around? I have just been checking. The Wikipedia article was started on 28 April, 2006 and was very brief. It has been added to and edited over and over again until it took its present form. The detailed editing history is there for anyone to check (see the History page for the article). So, it seems quite clear to me that the Wikipedia article is the original one and it has been copied by Absolute Astronomy without giving any credit to the Wikipedia. Therefore, the unsigned person above should be encouraged to complain to absoluteastronomy.com. and stop criticising the Wikipedia. Sincerely, John Hill (talk) 01:35, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is there anything that can be done about people who make up malicious lies?

[edit]

IP 96.247.93.128 has inserted what appears to be an outright malicious lie about Beebe to the blockquote in the article: "However, Beebe later confessed that he made most of these creatures up to gain more money from sponsors for more trips to the ocean's depths." This is the only contribution made from this IP address to the Wikipedia.

There is certainly no such quote about Beebe in the reference given. Having worked with Beebe and read all the books and articles I could find about him in the years since - I have never heard any such accusation before and it seems to me to be totally out of character. In fact Beebe had a well-earned reputation of being a world-class scientist, and fastidious observer and reporter of the things he studied. This is really a most unfair and underhanded slur on the memory of an truly exceptional and inspiring man and ground-breaking scientist who is no longer here to defend himself. I think the person who did this should apologise. Failing this, I believe the IP address should be indefinitely blocked. John Hill (talk) 08:00, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bathysphere (vessel)Bathysphere — The Bathysphere page currently redirects to this article, so the “vessel” qualifier isn’t necessary. This article used to be located at Bathysphere until it was copy-pasted to its current location in 2006 without any discussion, apparently because there is also a song called “bathysphere”. However, the deep-sea vessel is clearly the primary topic, since the song is not even notable enough to have its own article (the song link redirects to the title of the album). Calling the article “Bathysphere” is more consistent with the “naturalness” and “conciseness” criteria of WP:NAME. --Captain Occam (talk) 11:20, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This should be uncontroversial. And there should be a history merge. 216.8.134.99 (talk) 20:49, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed - we don't need "vessel" attached to bathysphere. Cheers, John Hill (talk) 00:07, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Valve ARG

[edit]

Valve Software are doing an ARG in various games. The letters from Gabe Newell to various gaming sites included parts of an image of a Bathysphere. Should this be noted?--Faillord adam (talk) 20:49, 10 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removing template in "other appearances" section

[edit]

Hi everyone - I added a few more citations - I hope enough to remove the maintenance template. Feel free to add it again if you still think it needs more support. Wskent (talk) 19:51, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
