Age of Angel Oak

[edit]

The cited source for age doesn't mention who estimated the age, let alone their credentials, the method used, or if this has been corroborated by any scientific authority. It's just "some guy said he thinks this..." 24.236.70.18 (talk) 23:02, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There are published references that claim the age of Angel Oak to be somewhere between 300 and 1500 years old.[1] The age of living trees is usually determined by dendrochronology, where an increment borer is used to extract a small sample of wood tissue to count growth rings. However, the trunk of Angel Oak no longer has solid wood extending to its core. Consequently, a 'best guess' by professional foresters and arborists, not just 'some guy', is that Angel Oak ranges between 300 and 500 years old,[1][2] as reported on the tree's website.[3] Woodlot (talk) 15:19, 22 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's currently an orphan and not in the commons, but I thought I'd make it useful.
