Norsemen from Norway settled the uninhabited

Dano-Norwegian explorers reached Greenland again, finding their earlier settlement extinct and reestablishing a permanent Scandinavian presence on the island. When Denmark and Norway separated in 1814, Greenland was transferred from the Norwegian to the Danish crown. The 1953
Constitution of Denmark ended Greenland's status as a colony, integrating it fully into the Danish state. In the
1979 Greenlandic home rule referendum , Denmark granted
home rule to Greenland. In the
2008 Greenlandic self-government referendum , Greenlanders voted for the Self-Government Act, which transferred more power from the Danish government to the local
Naalakkersuisut (Greenlandic government). Under this structure, Greenland gradually assumed responsibility for a number of governmental services and areas of competence. British Crown rule began in 1858. The rights promised to Indians were granted slowly, but

Mainland Southeast Asia and has a population of about 55 million. It is bordered by

Laos and
Thailand to its east and southeast, and the

Early civilisations in the area included the
Tibeto-Burman -speaking
Pyu city-states in
Upper Myanmar and the
Mon kingdoms in
Lower Myanmar . In the 9th century, the
Bamar people entered the upper
Irrawaddy valley, and following the establishment of the
Pagan Kingdom in the 1050s, the
Burmese language and
culture and
Theravada Buddhism slowly became dominant in the country. The
Pagan Kingdom fell to
Mongol invasions , and several warring states emerged. In the 16th century, reunified by the
Taungoo dynasty , the country became the largest empire in the
history of Southeast Asia for a short period. The early 19th-century
Konbaung dynasty ruled over an area that included modern Myanmar and briefly controlled
Assam , the
Lushai Hills , and
Manipur as well. The British
East India Company seized control of the administration of Myanmar after three
Anglo-Burmese Wars in the 19th century, and the country became a
British colony . After a brief
Japanese occupation , Myanmar was reconquered by the Allies. On 4 January 1948, Myanmar declared
independence under the terms of the
Burma Independence Act 1947 .
Myanmar's post-independence history has been checkered by continuing unrest and conflict to this day. The
coup d'état in 1962 resulted in a
military dictatorship under the
Burma Socialist Programme Party . On 8 August 1988, the
8888 Uprising then resulted in a nominal transition to a
multi-party system two years later, but the country's
post-uprising military council refused to cede power, and has continued to rule the country through to the present. The country remains riven by ethnic strife among its
myriad ethnic groups and has one of the world's
longest-running ongoing civil wars . The
United Nations and several other organisations have reported consistent and systemic
human rights violations in the country. In 2011, the
military junta was officially dissolved following a
2010 general election , and a nominally
civilian government was installed.
Aung San Suu Kyi and
political prisoners were released and the
2015 Myanmar general election was held, leading to improved
foreign relations and eased
economic sanctions , although the country's treatment of its
ethnic minorities , particularly in connection with the
Rohingya conflict , continued to be a source of international tension and consternation. Following the
2020 Myanmar general election , in which
Aung San Suu Kyi's party won a clear majority in both houses, the
Burmese military (Tatmadaw) again seized power
in a coup d'état . The coup, which was widely condemned by the
international community , led to
continuous ongoing widespread protests in Myanmar and has been marked by violent
political repression by the military, as well as a larger outbreak of the
civil war . The military also arrested Aung San Suu Kyi in order to remove her from public life, and charged her with crimes ranging from
corruption to violation of
COVID-19 protocols; all of the charges against her are "politically motivated" according to independent observers. (

central Ukraine in the 17th century but was partitioned between Russia and Poland before being absorbed by the
Russian Empire in the late 19th century.
Ukrainian nationalism developed and, following the
Russian Revolution in 1917, the short-lived
Ukrainian People's Republic was formed. The
Bolsheviks consolidated control over much of the former empire and established the
Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic , which became a
constituent republic of the
Soviet Union in 1922. In the early 1930s, millions of Ukrainians died in the
Holodomor , a
human-made famine . During
World War II , Ukraine was
occupied by Germany and endured
major battles and atrocities , resulting in 7 million civilians killed, including

Mandatory Palestine in 1920. Increased
Jewish immigration in the leadup to

British foreign policy in the Middle East led to
intercommunal conflict between

a civil war in 1947 after a
proposed partition by the United Nations was rejected by the Arabs.
After the
end of the British Mandate for Palestine , Israel
declared independence on 14 May 1948. Neighboring Arab states invaded the area the next day, beginning the
First Arab–Israeli War . Subsequent
armistice agreements established Israeli control over
77 percent of the former Mandate territory. The majority of
Palestinian Arabs were either
expelled or fled in what is known as the
Nakba , with
those remaining becoming the new state's main minority. Over the following decades, Israel's population increased greatly as the country received an influx of
Jews who emigrated, fled or were expelled from the Muslim world . Following the 1967
Six-Day War , Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Egyptian
Sinai Peninsula and Syrian
Golan Heights . Israel established and continues to expand
settlements across the
illegally occupied territories ,
contrary to international law, and has effectively
annexed East Jerusalem and the
Golan Heights in moves largely unrecognised internationally. After the 1973
Yom Kippur War , Israel signed
peace treaties with Egypt —returning the Sinai in 1982—and
Jordan . In 1993, Israel signed the
Oslo Accords , which established mutual recognition and limited Palestinian self-governance in parts of the West Bank and Gaza. In the 2020s, it
normalised relations with several more Arab countries via the
Abraham Accords . However,
efforts to resolve the
Israeli–Palestinian conflict after the interim Oslo Accords have not succeeded, and the country has engaged in
several wars and clashes with Palestinian

Tsardom of Russia in 1547. By the early 18th century, Russia had vastly expanded through conquest, annexation, and the efforts of
Russian explorers , developing into the
Russian Empire , which remains the
third-largest empire in history . However, with the
Russian Revolution in 1917, Russia's monarchic rule
was abolished and eventually replaced by the
Russian SFSR —the world's first constitutionally
socialist state . Following the
Russian Civil War , the Russian SFSR established the
Soviet Union with three other
Soviet republics , within which it was the largest and principal constituent. The Soviet Union underwent
rapid industrialisation in the 1930s , amidst the
deaths of millions under
Joseph Stalin 's rule, and later played a decisive role for the
Allies in World War II by leading large-scale efforts on the
Eastern Front . With the onset of the
Cold War , it competed with the
United States for
ideological dominance and
international influence . The Soviet era of the 20th century saw some of the
most significant Russian technological achievements , including the
first human-made satellite and the
first human expedition into outer space .
In 1991, the Russian SFSR emerged from the
dissolution of the Soviet Union as the Russian Federation.
A new constitution was adopted, which established a
federal semi-presidential system . Since the turn of the century, Russia's political system has been dominated by
Vladimir Putin ,
under whom the country has experienced
democratic backsliding and become an
authoritarian dictatorship .
Russia has been militarily involved in a number of
conflicts in former Soviet states and other countries , including
its war with Georgia in 2008 and
its war with Ukraine since 2014. The latter has involved the internationally unrecognised
annexations of Ukrainian territory, including
Crimea in 2014 and
four other regions in 2022 , during
an ongoing invasion . (
