The city is governed administratively into nine wards, with each ward represented by an elected councilor, and municipal elections are conducted every five years.
2025 Uttarakhand Municipal Elections
[edit]The last municipal polls were held on January 23, 2025, and results were declared on January 25, 2025. In this poll, Rizwan Ahmad (Advocate), independent candidate, won the seat of chairperson (Adhyaksh) of Mahuakhera Ganj Nagar Palika Parishad. He secured 5,096 votes defeating another independent candidate Abdul Hasan with 2,474 votes and Mohammad Saleem from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) who received 1,351 votes.
The formal oath-taking ceremony of the new chairperson and councilors was conducted on February 7, 2025.
Previous Leadership (2018-2025)
[edit]During the 2018 municipal elections, Nasima Begum of the Indian National Congress (INC) was democratically elected as the chairperson. She defeated independent candidate Mehtab Jahan by 499 votes, securing a total of 2,603 votes. She remained in office until 2025, when Rizwan Ahmad was chosen to be her successor.

Political Significance
[edit]The political scene of Mahuakhera Ganj has shown a transformation from party-oriented leadership under the Indian National Congress (INC) to independent candidates winning large elections. The election of Rizwan Ahmad is a sign of a transformation in political inclination, with a greater number of voters supporting independent leadership over traditional political parties.
With a five-year tenure, the new government led by Rizwan Ahmad is hoping to tackle civic problems and enhance local government in the region. Future municipal elections in 2030 will gauge whether independent leadership persists or whether political parties reassert control in the region.
