Brooke Slusser

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brooke Slusser (born 2003) is an American collegiate volleyball player and co-captain for the San Jose State University (SJSU) Spartans women's volleyball team. She has gained national attention for her involvement in legal challenges regarding transgender athletes' participation in women’s sports. Her actions have sparked widespread debate about the interpretation and implementation of Title IX protections in collegiate athletics.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Brooke Slusser was born and raised in Denton, Texas. She attended Guyer High School, where she excelled in volleyball and was named the 2019 All-Area MVP during her junior season. Slusser also played for the Texas Advantage Volleyball Club and was recognized as an Under Armour Honorable Mention All-American in 2020. [1]

Slusser initially committed to the University of Alabama, where she played volleyball for two seasons. In 2023, she transferred to San Jose State University, citing her desire for a new environment and a fresh start.[2]

Collegiate career

[edit]

At SJSU, Slusser became the starting setter and was named an All-Mountain West Conference Honorable Mention during her first season. Her contributions helped the Spartans achieve their best start in program history in 2024, winning their first ten matches.[3]

[edit]

In 2024, Slusser joined a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference, alleging that policies allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports violated Title IX. Slusser claimed that these policies compromised the safety and fairness of women’s sports.[4]

The lawsuit gained additional attention due to the presence of a transgender athlete on the SJSU volleyball team. Slusser and several other athletes alleged that they were not informed about the athlete's gender identity until months after they began playing together. Slusser cited safety concerns, stating that the athlete's physical attributes posed a heightened risk during matches.[5]

Slusser’s public statements, including appearances on national news outlets, have positioned her as a prominent voice in the ongoing debate over transgender participation in athletics.[6]

Impact and Controversy

[edit]

Slusser’s advocacy has polarized opinions. Supporters argue that her stance highlights critical issues of fairness and safety in women’s sports, while critics assert that her actions perpetuate discrimination against transgender individuals.[7] Teams in the Mountain West Conference, including Boise State and Utah State, forfeited matches against SJSU in protest of the controversy. [8]

The NCAA and SJSU have defended their policies, stating that all athletes meet the governing body’s eligibility requirements. Opponents of the lawsuit, including LGBTQ advocacy groups, have criticized the movement as harmful to transgender athletes. [9]

Personal life

[edit]

Slusser has stated that her advocacy is motivated by a desire to preserve opportunities for future generations of female athletes. She has expressed concerns about the long-term impact of transgender inclusion policies on women’s sports.[10]
