Rafael Nadal defeated Guillermo Coria in the final, 6–4, 3–6, 6–3, 4–6, 7–6(8–6) to win the men's singles title at the 2005 Italian Open. Nadal was making his tournament debut, at only 18 years old.[1][2][3]

Carlos Moyá was the defending champion, but lost in the first round to Potito Starace.
