Dr. Jules Francois Marmont is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Dr. Diana Marmont) of the 2024 survival horror videogame Alan Wake II DLC: The Lake House.
He is a scientist for the Federal Bureau of Control alongside his wife Diana, and co-head of research at the Lake House facility in Bright Falls. After using unethical methods to one-up his wife, Jules is turned into a taken after the Dark Presence takes over the Lake House upon the Cauldron Lake's threshold being linked to the Lake House.
He is portrayed by Phillipe Spall.
Biography[]
Background[]
Little is known of Jules Francois Marmont's past, but he attended Barrows University and graduated in 2001 with a degree of doctor of applied science. Around this time, he met fellow scientist Diana, and the two formed a dynamic partnership by balancing out their weaknesses. With Jules' charisma balancing with Diana's innovation, they were able to receive funding from bureaucrats for projects. At some point they got positions at the Federal Bureau of Control, and later married while becoming rising stars in the clandestine organization. In addition, Jules received an award for his scientific contributions by the bureau's head of research, Doctor Casper Darling.
Research Facility WA-03[]
Following the 2010 altered world event at Cauldron Lake, the bureau investigated Bright Falls, learning of its sorted history with the Dark Presence. Wanting to study the paranatural entity, the bureau built Research Facility WA-03 (commonly referred to as the Lake House), a research station dedicated to studying the nature of the Dark Presence and its ability to covert and manipulate art into reality. FBC Director Zachariah Trench assigned the Marmonts as the research facility's co-heads, and Diana began Project Arbutus in 2016 to study the definition of art. Dr. Darling also tasked the team with understanding and suppressing the Cauldron Lake threshold, and their studies helped the investigations department create the early-warning system that was stationed near the lake.
Four months later, Diana found documents regarding Dr. Emil Hartman's experiments on patients, and messaged Dr. Darling for a request to use live test subjects for their project. The message frustrated Jules, knowing that the ash act protocol prohibited this and resulted in Darling visiting the facility for a week. Following the visit, Jules unraveled, unearthing his inferiority complex, his resentment towards Diana and hatred for Darling. Despite bureau leadership denying her request, Darling's disappearance and the Oldest House going dark in 2019, allowed the Marmonts the conduct illegal experiments without repercussions. With their freedom from the higher ups, the couple changed Darlings' directive to their own - create a stable connection between the Cauldron Lake threshold and their reality to traverse the dimension.
Also in the same year, the research team provided report on the bureau's surveillance on the painter Rudolf Lane, one of Hartman's former patients that survived the 2010 altered world event. In 2020, Lane volunteered to enter the facility and was tested, revealing that he's a class two parautilitarian. By 2021, the Marmonts relationship soured, with their resentment growing to the point that staff members felt the tension between the two.
Project Rhamnus[]
In 2022, Alan Wake's manuscript pages were found by the team, which foretold of the Marmont's hatred for each other and making them characters in his story. It's left ambiguous if Wake's manuscript amplified the Marmont's growing resentment, but Diana notes that she and Jules hostility increased during the past year. Upon reading a page forewarning disaster, Jules asked Diana to abandon the project for the team's safety, but she accused of worrying about his own skin. With the two preferring different methods for the directive, alongside vying to defeat each other, the Marmonts created two projects and teams to do their work. While Diana focused her work on replicating Wake's writing style with Project Arbutus, Jules headed Project Rhamnus and focused on having Lane create paintings.
Jules' project was initially unsuccessful, as Lane's paintings remained landscapes and revealed locations for manuscript pages and wouldn't form a link for the threshold. The painter also lost interest in his work and wanted to return home, and began to spite the doctors by destroying his paintings and doing abstract art. To break the halting of his research, Jules drugged Rudolf's food to make him compliant. After Lane committed suicide by cutting his writs, the research found that he left a painting from his own blood. The painting's readings were off the charts, and Jules believed that he had won over Diana and had the painting placed at sublevel five for his experiment. Jules also sabotaged Diana's project by withholding manuscript pages, resulting in her abducting Ed and Tammy Booker in an effort to achieve success.
With the final experiment, the painting was able to form a connection with the Cauldron Lake threshold, but it was unstable and allowed the Dark Presence to breach the station. The Marmonts were turn into taken, with the rest of the staff either turning or being killed in the process. Additionally, Lane's painting became sentient from the overlap, and created the painted to deal with any living thing across the facility.
Alan Wake II[]
The Final Draft[]
In the manuscript page "Breakthrough in the Lakehouse", it foretells of Jules final moments before being taken by the Dark Presence, with it noting that he was smiling upon realizing that he beat Diana.
The Lake House[]
With the early warning alarm activating in Bright Falls, FBC agent Kiran Estevez and her team travel to the Lake House in hopes of getting intel since the Oldest House is still dark. Upon leaving the building's elevator for the first time, the Marmonts appears in a vision jump-scare alongside Scratch as the station is breached. During the investigation, Jules murders Estevez's team and stalks the agent across the facility. At sublevel five, Jules attacks Estevez to prevent her from closing the threshold, but is killed by Diana with block rock. Due to Diana's actions, Estevez is able to kill the taken Marmont and shut down the unstable overlap. Upon destroying the link, Estevez and Ed Booker found themselves outside the Lake House.
Quotes[]
“ | When the source material is open for interpretation, how will the Shadow choose to interpret it? I think Diana will find the question very interesting. Most likely she already has an answer. That is why I love her. | „ |
~ An audio recording of Marmont. |
“ | He comes to my lab and treats me like some assistant! Un putain assistant, moi? I run the Lake House! This is my facility! Mine! He cannot just walk in here for one week, make some speeches, then fly back to New York. Espece de cretin! Pretentieux! The jack**s thinks he is a f-cking rock star! And he made fun of the name! Ooh, the Shadow. The Shadow is good! It's evocative. He is just a spoiled little child and I will make it so everyone can see this! I will make it so no one even remembers his name. Et tous ces imbeciles, la! They all think I'm a pencil pusher. They all think I do not have the mind for such work. Eh bien, ils verront! I will take what they think is possible and I will break it! | „ |
~ Jules' video rant against Dr. Darling, Diana and the research team. |
“ | Rudolf Lane: I can't paint anymore. I know you want me to paint, but I can't. I'm empty. Jules Marmont: Rudolf, no! You love to paint. And you are such a talent! This is just a classic artist slump. Rudolf Lane: No I... I hate it. It's just taking from me now. When can I leave? You said you'd let me leave. Jules Marmont: Ah, Rudolf, but you volunteered yo come, remember? We are helping you, like Dr. Hartman did. Perhaps you need to see our doctor? I can arrange that. Rudolf Lane: No, no, that's... I am feeling better. Much better. I will paint. Jules Marmont: Ah, this is wonderful to hear, Rudolf. I knew you would come back to your old self. |

~ An audio recording of Marmont's session with Lane. |
“ | Lane was found dead in his cell this morning. It's a... an unfortunate setback. But! When a door is closed, a window is opened. I believe that is the saying. Lane may be gone, but he left us with a goodbye present. A final piece of art. This piece is different. It is raw emotion. Pure truth. He put everything he had into this one. Literally. Every reading we take is off the charts. This is what we have been waiting for. It is the key! I will achieve what no one has before me. Not Darling, that arrogant s-it. Not my selfish harpy of a wife! I never needed any of them. The fools will finally see for the genius I am. | „ |
