Change the future

The PyCon 5k Charity Fun Run

Results

Results from the Second Annual PyCon 5k are now available!. Thanks to Lapio for timing, and congratulations to everyone who came out.

About

Many Pythonistas are active runners. More are probably waiting for a kick in the pants to get up, get out the door, and start running. Well, here's your chance! Whether it's part of your regular training, a New Years resolution, or you just want to help out a good cause -- we hope you'll join us for the second annual PyCon 5k!

Runners and walkers of all abilities are welcome!

2012 was an amazing event - Complete race results and Photos. Last year we raised almost $6000 for Autism Speaks, the American Cancer Society, and the Epilepsy Foundation

Please note that the exact time and trail map may change as we get closer to the conference.

When

Saturday, March 16th, 2013 at 7:00am (before the conference starts on Saturday).

Where

The run will be an out-and-back course starting on San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail which runs just beside the PyCon venue. The course runs north along the trail towards the bay, turns west along the Baylands Park Trail, then north along the San Francisco Bay Trail to a nice view of the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay at the turn-around point.

See the course map for more details, including trail access and such.

About half the course is paved, the other half on a groomed gravel path. Road shoes, trail shoes, or minimalists shoes will be just fine.

Registration

Please register online - note that registration is separate from registration for PyCon itself.

The run is "pay what you want" -- so free if you like. All proceeds will be donated to the following:

Why these? See:

Fundamentally, the PyCon is about community - and there is nothing more foundational to that than the python community taking care, and honoring its own. We feel that sending the proceeds to these entities is the best way to honor John Hunter's work, and for all of us who have battled with cancer, or lost a loved one to it.

Want to make this your first 5K?

If this'll be your first run - congratulations! If you're looking for a simple training plan to help you get in shape, we recommend Couch to 5K (also see c25k.com) - it's how your conference chair, Jesse Noller, and program chair, Jacob Kaplan-Moss, got started.

Stretch Goals?

Stretch goals? Really? Oh yes - in the spirit of Kickstarter and Indiegogo, some of us have offered up bonuses for those who donate the most. This run is very special this year if you haven't guessed. So here are some ideas and "prizes" for special donations:

  • Top Donor: PyCon Chair Jesse Noller will give you a piggy back ride or otherwise pull/push you on a cart with wheels the entire length of the 5k.

More goals and prizes to be announced.
