Events

Visiting the Iowa City area for an Iowa Hawkeye football game? Get ready for a full weekend with the best game day weekend experiences. From outdoor recreation to shopping and all kinds of dining, you can make a different itinerary for each visit (because we bet you won’t come just once)!

Friday

Kick off your day with a little competition! Tee off at Brown Deer Golf Club or Finkbine Golf Club—whether you’re a seasoned pro or just like the sound of your club hitting the ball, it’s the perfect way to start your Friday. Not a golfer? No worries—grab your bike and hit the trails! Start at Tom Harkin Trailhead or explore any of the hundreds of miles of scenic paths in the area. Feel the fall breeze as you pedal through golden leaves. Looking for a view? Take a peaceful hike up to the cliffs at Squire Point and soak in the beauty of the Iowa River.

Time to refuel and do some shopping! Take a quick hop off I-80 and dive into Iowa River Landing in Coralville, where boutique shops and cozy restaurants await. After lunch, head to Downtown Iowa City. Whether you’re on a mission for new Hawkeye gear or simply browsing the local stores, you’ll love wandering through the pedestrian mall, snapping pics of murals, and exploring the hidden gems of the Northside neighborhood. Pop into the Old Capitol Museum for a taste of history or just people-watch from a café patio with your favorite drink in hand.

As the sun sets, the fun is just getting started! If you’re into live music, check out The Englert Theatre, Gabe’s, or catch the local vibe at the Friday Night Concert Series. Feeling a bit adventurous? Try your hand at ax-throwing at Hatchet Jack’s—an exhilarating experience for anyone 18 and older. For a more laid-back evening, Big Grove Brewery offers craft brews, a sprawling patio, and a dog- and family-friendly atmosphere. You can even head just north of the city to unwind with a glass of wine or bourbon at Cedar Ridge Winery and Distillery in Swisher.

Treat yourself to a rooftop dinner with a view at Vue Rooftop, or go classic with a mouthwatering steak at Joseph’s Steakhouse. Pizza lovers, rejoice! Whether it’s the legendary Pagliai’s Pizza or the unbeatable Wig & Pen, you won’t be disappointed. If seafood is your thing, St. Burch Tavern will have you swooning over their fresh catches. The best part? These are just a taste of the amazing dinner options in Iowa City—you’re in for a culinary adventure wherever you choose!

Saturday

Today’s the day! Iowa City on game day is a massive celebration, with over 100,000 fans decked out in black and gold filling the streets. The energy is contagious as you make your way down Melrose Avenue, soaking in the sights, sounds, and smells of tailgating heaven. Set up your own spot, or just wander and join the party—lawn games, grills sizzling, and cold drinks flowing are all part of the pre-game ritual. University of Iowa parking lots open six hours before kickoff (no earlier than 6:00 a.m.), so arrive early to claim your space!

Before heading into the stadium, don’t miss the iconic moment when the Iowa Football team steps off the buses and touches the bronze helmet next to the towering 20-foot Nike Kinnick statue as they enter the stadium—it’s a Hawkeye tradition that never fails to stir up excitement. About an hour and fifteen minutes before kickoff, head over to the UI Recreation Building (just northwest of the stadium) to catch the Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band for a sneak peek of their pre-game performance.

The Kinnick Experience
Doors to Kinnick Stadium open two hours before kickoff, and once you’re inside, you’re in for a Big 10 experience like no other. When the Hawkeyes storm the field to the sound of AC/DC’s “Back in Black”, the roar of 70,000 fans fills the air, flags flying high, spelling out “I-O-W-A” with each score. It’s not just a game, it’s an event. Sing along to the Iowa Fight Song, cheer until you’re hoarse, and join one of the most heartfelt traditions in college sports—The Iowa Wave. At the end of the first quarter, thousands of fans turn and wave to the kids watching from the windows of the Stead Family Children’s Hospital—a simple yet powerful gesture that brings chills every time.

If the Hawkeyes win (and let’s hope they do!), cap off the experience by singing the Iowa Victory Polka with the entire crowd, reveling in the celebration of another Hawkeye triumph.

Post-Game Fun
Still got energy to spare? Depending on when the game ends, hit up one of the local hotspots mentioned earlier! Whether it’s grabbing a drink at Joe’s Place, celebrating with pizza at Marquee Pizzeria, or unwinding on a patio in Downtown Iowa City, there’s no shortage of ways to keep the fun rolling long after the final whistle.

Get ready for an unforgettable game day—it’s a black-and-gold celebration that’ll leave you buzzing long after the day is done! Go Hawks!

Sunday

Start your morning slow with a delicious brunch at one of Iowa City area’s favorite spots. Whether it’s the made from scratch fare at Barrett’s Quality Eats, the classic comfort food at Bluebird Diner, or the modern flair of Tin Roost, you’re in for a treat. Each spot offers its own twist on brunch, perfect for fueling up for a day of laid-back fun.

Once you’ve satisfied your brunch cravings, take a scenic drive just north of town to Wilson’s Orchard—the perfect fall escape. Stroll through the apple trees, pick your own apples, and be sure to try their famous apple cider donuts and refreshing apple slushies. The orchard’s event venue and restaurant make it a perfect spot for families and friends to relax and enjoy the best of fall in Iowa.

And for more autumn fun, head to Colony Acres Family Farm beginning in late September. It’s a seasonal favorite with pumpkins, a corn maze, and plenty of family-friendly activities to keep everyone entertained. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect pumpkin or getting lost in the corn maze, it’s the ideal way to embrace the season.

After a perfect weekend, enjoy a safe drive home—until it’s time to do it all over again for the next home game!
