Is medical school your dream? Good! But remember: the journey is uncertain, expensive, and bumpy. Luckily, The Short Coat Podcast comes to you each and every week, is totally free, and most important: our student co-hosts tell you what it’s really like, from the first year to the last, and beyond.
What the reviews say about us:
“You guys are never afraid to share opposing/differing viewpoints which in my opinion is what makes this podcast so special! So thank you 😁 “

“I’m a cross country runner and I frequently run eight and nine miles, and instead of listening to the same old boring music, I listen to this podcast and have so much more fun, though I do get the occasional weird look when the podcast makes me laugh ( which is pretty often)… Overall I just want to say thank you to Dave and all the guest stars on the podcast, you guys are awesome and I can’t wait to listen to all the new episodes!”
saharanevada
“From the beginning, everyone on the show has been informative and funny! I didn’t expect the students and the host to be funny when talking about medicine, but it is sprinkled in within the show and I love it. They do a great job on keeping us up to date on medicine and do an amazing job at answering the viewers’ questions. So thankful I get to make this show apart of my week!”

What’s it like to be a medical student?
Since 2010, the students at the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine have chipped away at that question. Studying’s important, blah, blah, but we’d prefer to do it while laughing, thinking, and having fun along the way.
The Short Coat Podcast is about remembering that the social aspects of medicine and medical education, and the people that make our work interesting, are just as important as the science and the test scores. It can be a place for the party line, and a place for the counter-narrative. It’s about whatever you want it to be about. Whether you’re already in med school, or thinking about applying, we’re here to let you in on the secrets, the fun bits, the challenges, and the frustrations. We answer your questions, like:
- Is it worth going to medical school?
-
How do medical schools choose students?
-
Is it possible to get into med school with a lower GPA?
