Eugene Linden is a character mentioned in The Last of Us Part II. He was a patrolman who lived in Jackson as part of Maria Miller's community. He had served in the Fireflies alongside Tommy Miller.[1] While living in Jackson, he formed a close friendship with Dina. By 2038, he died of a stroke at age 73, one of few people living in the post-apocalyptic world to die of natural causes.[2]
Biography[]
Background[]
Eugene was born in either 1964 or 1965. At some point, he got married to his wife Claire and they had a daughter together. Sometime following the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak, Eugene served as a member of the Fireflies alongside Tommy Miller.[1] Eugene abandoned his wife and daughter, despite the former's protests, to join the group.[3]
Under the command of a brutal cell leader, he and Tommy committed several terrorist attacks together while in the group, particularly in the Denver QZ. One attack there led to the deaths of three soldiers and two civilians. According to Dina, Eugene also tortured a general in the military with Tommy, something that she couldn't see either of the men doing after she met them.[2]
Based on the Creek Trails logbook, Eugene signed up for the creek trail and ski lodge patrol routes in 2034.[4] He rotated his routes with different patrolmen, notably Jesse, Mike and Bonnie before settling with Dina as his regular partner.[2] He mentored Dina during their patrols by teaching her how to repair electronics, which later allows her to repair the radio in the theater in Seattle.[5] He regularly retreated to an abandoned library, transforming it into an outpost for himself. He never took Dina here, treating it as a private retreat. His regular absence from Jackson to visit the library led Dina to describe him as a lonely man.[2]
While on patrol, Eugene placed a focus on rescuing and recruiting other survivors from infected attacks and taking them back to Jackson. However, he never risked fighting infected hordes, leaving Joel and Tommy to handle them. Despite the difficulties in living during the apocalypse, Eugene had a sense of humor, writing several jokes in the Jackson log books while on patrol even though this was against patrol policy. He particularly made fun of Mike, who was the most serious patrolman he worked with.[4]
Events of The Last of Us Part II[]
During their patrol, Ellie and Dina mention that Eugene died from a stroke at the age of 73, the two of them wistfully hoping that they remain as sharp-witted, let alone alive at that age.
When the two women escape a blizzard by taking shelter in an abandoned library, they find a plethora of electronics and equipment that belonged to Eugene, as well as his Firefly pendant.[2]
