The 76th Annual Primetime Emmys have finally revealed the winners for the 2023-2024 TV season. This was the second Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony of the year, coming after the 75th Annual Primetime Emmys, which took place in January and saw the Television Academy celebrate the 2022-2023 TV season. Of course, the ceremonies were delayed by last year’s historic WGA and SAG strikes, but now the TV awards calendar is back on track. Hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, the 2024 Emmys was one for the books, bringing in a new batch of winners that made great history for the Television Academy.
Fx’s Shōgun made history at the 2024 Emmys, making a new all-time record for a single season of TV with 18 wins total. This tally combines 14 wins from the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys and 4 wins from the 76th Primetime Emmys broadcast. FX’s historical drama set in feudal Japan became the first majority non-English language show to win Outstanding Drama Series in Emmy history. It was only the second of its kind to ever be nominated, coming after Netflix’s Squid Game in 2022. Meanwhile, Shōgun’s Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai were awarded their first Emmys, also becoming the first Japenese actor and Japanese actress to win in the leading acting categories for Drama Series. These 2024 Emmy wins mark a huge moment for Asian representation in television, and fans will be excited to know that Shōgun Season 2 is already in development at Disney/Hulu.
Unsurprisingly, FX’s The Bear also made history from the 2024 Emmy winners by breaking its own record for most wins for a Comedy Series in a single season. With 11 Emmy wins total, including those of lead actor Jeremy Allen-White, supporting actor Ebon-Moss Bachrach, and more, The Bear continues to be a favorite among Television Academy voters. Additionally, The Bear‘s Liza Colón-Zayas has now become the first Latina to win the Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The night for comedy just didn’t belong to The Bear, though, as the Max original series Hacks managed to swoop in and snag some huge wins. Jean Smart was awarded the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, now making her a 6x Emmy winner. The show won the grand prize of Outstanding Comedy Series as well, just 5 days before Hacks Season 4 is set to begin shooting!
In the limited or anthology series categories, Netflix’s Baby Reindeer took home 4 major wins tonight: Outstanding Limited Series, Writing for a Limited Series, Lead Actor in a Limited Series for creator/star Richard Gadd, and Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for Jessica Gunning. Gadd and Gunning are both first-time Emmy winners. Other notable actors who became first-time winners at the 2024 Emmys include Lamorne Morris for FX’s Fargo, Jodie Foster for HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, and Elizabeth Debicki for The Crown. Overall, FX won the most awards from all the networks at the 2024 Emmys with 36 wins total. Netflix came in second place with 24 Emmys, followed by HBO and Max in third place with 14 wins, Apple TV+ in fourth with 10, and then finally ABC, Disney+, Hulu, and NBC all tied in fifth with 7.
Check out the 2024 Emmys winners list below, along with some additional fun categories for the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys, which took place last week. The 76th Primetime Emmys aired from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 15 starting at 8 pm ET and were broadcast live on ABC.
