About our DEI vision
Our mission is to promote a unified community of inclusion, respect, and excellence through the recruitment of diverse talent and the inclusion of broad perspectives, backgrounds and life experiences in our student, staff, and faculty communities.
Letter from the DEI Assistant Dean
Welcome to our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion web pages. We hope you find resources of value here. It includes many voices now with the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability in our #StanfordCelebrates series. You can find materials for best practices in our new Resources library.
We also have resources for faculty and staff, current students, prospective students, and postdocs. There are avenues through which you can participate in events, monitor our progress, give feedback, report issues, and find support.
Our DEI vision

The DEI office integrates diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability to help remove barriers to education and cultivate an environment that embraces many different perspectives.
Spanning three years (2021-2024), the DEI Action Plan's priorities include educating the community about DEI issues, enhancing support for an inclusive environment, engaging with minority-serving institutions and broad networks to share opportunities, and expecting success across departments and units. Progress is shared publicly on the Action Plan milestone website.
To contribute to these goals, the DEI office organizes programs, provides resources, and leads inclusion efforts. We host informal “Coffee Convos” open to the entire Stanford community in honor of various cultural months and celebrations. We also give trainings such as Respectful Community Workshops throughout the year.
By being attuned to the various experiences and pathways to academia, we can build a more inclusive educational and scientific environment for everyone.
From vision to practice
Building on the work created by our Respectful & Inclusive Workshop program (2006) and the Office of Multicultural Affairs (2010) established by Professor Emeritus Jerry Harris to diversify the geosciences pipeline, our 2021–2024 DEI Vision, Goals and Action Plan was developed under the heightened awareness of systemic barriers in society and within our academic community that impact access to opportunity. Against this backdrop, we are determined to improve and expand our DEI practices and to create an inclusive school for all.
The plan is a roadmap outlining current and future efforts around inclusive best practices and training, broad enhancements to the student, faculty and staff experience, improved engagement, expanded hiring outreach and student recruitment, and measures for progress. The action plan is organized around four areas that inform our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts:
- Educate more members of our community about inclusion issues and inclusive best practices.
- Enhance support and resources to create an inclusive environment, particularly for historically underrepresented groups in the Earth sciences.
- Engage and partner with minority-serving institutions, organizations, and diverse networks to recruit and share educational and career opportunities.
- Expect positive outcomes across research groups, departments/programs, and administrative units.
