Survivor New Zealand: Nicaragua

Survivor New Zealand: Nicaragua is the first season of the competitive reality TV show Survivor New Zealand.

Production[]

Applications for the season were open on February 24, 2016, with almost 8,000 applications being received by production in the first four days.^[1]

The season began filming in August 2016 in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, the same location as four seasons of the American edition: Survivor: Nicaragua, Survivor: Redemption Island, Survivor: San Juan del Sur, and Survivor: Worlds Apart.^[2]

Twists/Changes[]

40 Days: The game will go on for 40 days, instead of the usual 39 days from Survivor (U.S.).
Double Tribal Council: On Day 1, both tribes were sent to Tribal Council to vote out one person each.
Redemption Island: Voted out players will be sent to Redemption Island, where they will compete against each other for a chance to go back into the game.
Tribe Switch: On Day 11, the players would switch tribes, with the person that gets the black buff being exiled to Redemption Island and would return later to join the tribe that went to Tribal Council.

Season Summary[]

The 16 castaways were split into two tribes: Hermosa and Mogotón. On Day 1, both tribes were sent to Tribal Council to vote out one member each based on first impressions. The following day, a Redemption Island twist was revealed to the remaining castaways. Hermosa found themselves in an early winning streak, winning three of the first four challenges. Mogotón's misery was compounded when Lou McClintock was medically evacuated from the game on Day 10. On Day 12, a Tribe Switch occurred. On the new Mogotón tribe, a male alliance formed.

At the merge, Shay Tapusoa re-entered the game through Redemption Island after being eliminated on Day 16. The new Casar tribe saw two of the strongest physical competitors Lee Den Haan and Mike Sparrow eliminated in back-to-back blindsides, weakening the male alliance. The blindsides continued when Barb Raos orchestrated the elimination of another key player in Sala Tiatia. The two remaining younger men, Tom Paterson and Avi Duckor-Jones, found themselves the next targets, but Tom went on an immunity run, and a move was made to instead eliminate Shannon Quinn, who was widely seen as untrustworthy.

Mike and Nate became the final returnees from Redemption Island on Day 36, but both were immediately voted out for good at the next two Tribal Councils, leaving Avi, Barb and Tom as the Final Three. At the Final Tribal Council, the jury heavily criticized Barb for her poor social game, while Tom and Avi were praised for their honesty. Ultimately, Avi's social game impressed the jury and he won the title of Sole Survivor in a 6-1-0 vote.

Notes: ^1 Lou was medically evacuated on Day 10 due to an infection from a cut on her feet. ^2 Shannon got the black buff during the tribe switch; therefore, she was exiled to Redemption Island and rejoined the game as a member of Hermosa, replacing Georgia and evening the tribes at 5-5.

Trivia[]

This season uses the Survivor: Micronesia rendition of "Ancient Voices."
The Tribal Councils on Days 35 and 38 were attended by the same four castaways. In both cases, Nate Davis was voted out in a 3-1 vote over Tom Paterson.
Of the English-language Survivor seasons, Nicaragua is the only one with a Final Three to not feature Hidden Immunity Idols.
- It is also the only one with Redemption Island in play to not feature Hidden Immunity Idols.
