Control how your location is used for notifications
The Google app uses the general area youâre in to send some notifications, such as weather updates and crisis alerts, to ensure theyâre relevant and helpful. Google determines this general area in the background based on a variety of sources, including your IP address, and depending on your settings, your deviceâs location and previous activity.
You can control whether the Google app uses your location this way with the âUse current locationâ setting in your Google app notification settings. To ensure you get important alerts for your location, the âUse current locationâ setting is turned on by default, but you can turn it off anytime.
Important: When âUse current locationâ is on, the Google app temporarily saves the general area youâre in so that the app can use your last known location to send you helpful updates. This information is automatically deleted based on Googleâs Privacy Policy.
Turn off current location use for notifications
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google app .
- At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial Settings Notifications Your notification topics & settings.
- Important: Users with older app versions may find Manage notifications you opted into instead of Your notification topics & settings.

Important: If your home or work location is set on Google, you may still get location-based notifications when âUse current locationâ is turned off. Learn more about how you can update your location settings.
