Create commands to control online services & devices

Important: Changes are coming to how Google Assistant works with  IFTTT. IFTTT is a separate company from Google.

In September, these services will move to a different platform. When this happens, you’ll need to reconnect IFTTT to the Google Home App and rebuild or re-add your Applets.

You can create your own commands for your Google Assistant with IFTTT. Learn about services and devices you can control.

For example, if you say:

  • "Hey Google, activate 'tell my friends I'm going sailing,'" then a status update is posted to your social network.

Together, your custom phrase and action is called an Applet. You can create an IFTTT Applet or use Applets that other people have created.

Get started

  1. On your mobile device, open the Google Home App Google Home.
  2. If you haven’t already, sign in or sign up.
  3. At the top left, tap Add and then Set up device Add and then Works with Google.
  4. Enter IFTTT and tap Search.
  5. To connect, tap IFTTT.

Tip: You can also create and manage your Applets with the IFTTT app.

Create or edit Applets

Step 1: Create a phrase

Create one or more phrases that will trigger an action from your Google Assistant.
  1. On your mobile device, go to IFTTT.com.
  2. At the top right, tap your picture and then Create and then If This.
  3. Search for "Google Assistant v2."
  4. Tap Google Assistant v2 Assistant.
  5. Choose a trigger from the list or tap Suggest a new trigger.
  6. Complete the trigger fields.
  7. Tap Create trigger.

Important: To activate an Applet, you need to say “Okay Google, activate,” followed by the trigger phrase for that Applet.

Step 2: Create an action

Create the action you want your Google Assistant to complete when you say your phrase.

  1. Tap Then That.
  2. Search for an action service.
  3. If the service asks you to connect your account, follow the on-screen instructions to sign in.
  4. Select an action and fill in the required fields.
  5. Tap Create action.
    • To make changes to your Applet, at the top left, tap Back
  6. Tap Finish.
Find or edit your Applets

You can make changes to Applets you've created or added to use with your Google Assistant.

  1. On your mobile device, go to IFTTT.com.
  2. At the top, tap My Applets My Applets.
  3. Tap Google Assistant Assistant.
  4. Under "My Applets," tap an Applet. From here, you can:
  • Turn the Applet on or off.
  • Check the Applet: To see if the Applet is working, tap Check now. If it’s working, you get "Applet checked."
  • Edit the Applet: Tap Configure Settings. Make your changes, then tap Save.
  • Find your activity log: Tap Configure Settings and then View activity log.
  • Delete the Applet: Tap Configure Settings. Scroll to and tap Delete.

Fix an Applet that isn’t working

If an Applet isn’t working, you might have an issue with your device settings.

To fix the issue:

  • Repeat your phrase. Speak clearly and naturally.
  • Make sure you use one of the phrases you've added to your Applet. If it still doesn't work, try to add a different phrase to trigger the applet. Learn how to find or edit an Applet.

Remove IFTTT from your Google Home App Account

  1. Open the Google Home App Google Home.
  2. At the top left, tap Add and then Set up a device Add and then Works with Google.
  3. Under Linked devices, tap IFTTT and then tap Unlink account
