Feature availability
Personalization when using Help me write in Google Docs is available for:
- Gemini Alpha, which is available for work and school accounts only. Your administrator controls access to Gemini Alpha work and school accounts. If you can't find this feature, your administrator may not have Alpha features enabled for your organization.
- Google AI Ultra and Google AI Pro personal accounts.
- Google Workspace Experiments, which is a trusted tester program for personal accounts to try new AI features. Learn more about Workspace Experiments.
This feature is currently available on desktop and in English only.

You can draft and refine content in Google Docs using information directly from your files in Drive, Chat, Gmail, and the web.
- Edit with a prompt: Make the introduction more concise and professional.
- Refine with quick actions: Highlight text to Rephrase, Shorten, Elaborate, Bulletize, or Summarize the content. You can also update the content to More formal or More casual.
- Edit using context from another file: You can use your own documents as a source to add data, evidence, and citations.
- Use the writing style of an existing file: Gemini can edit your documentâs style mirroring the writing style of existing documents.
Write, edit, or refine text with Gemini
To edit with Gemini, click Gemini . Then, enter a prompt. When you edit, you donât need to select any text since Gemini can understand the context of your doc and make broad or specific updates based on your instructions.
- On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
- To target a specific section, at the bottom bar, mention the section in the prompt. For example: âAdd evidence to my Research section.â
- Or, to refine the whole document, you can enter a prompt like âSuggest places where I can better defend my argument.â
- Optional: Add sources for Gemini to reference when you write. Learn how to reference other files to edit or refine content.
- Gemini will show suggestions directly in your document.
- To apply changes individually, click Accept suggestion

- To apply all changes, click Accept all.
- To reject all changes, click Reject all.
- To apply changes individually, click Accept suggestion

Edit text with one click
- On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
- Select the text you want to rewrite.
- On the floating bar, click Refine
.
- To refine the content, use the suggested text after you click:
- Rephrase
- Shorten
- More
Elaborate, More formal, More casual, Bulletize, or Summarize
- Rephrase
- To refine the content, use the suggested text after you click:
- Review the suggested changes.
- To apply changes individually, click Accept suggestion

- To apply the changes, click Accept all.
- To reject the changes, click Reject all.

Reference other files to create content
You can ask Gemini to use specific files to write, edit, or refine content. For example: âUpdate the project timeline based on the latest updates from our meeting notes doc.â
- At the bottom bar, click Sources
Add from Drive or other location.
- Or, you can type â@â and then search and select from the menu.
- Select one or more files.
- Click Add.
Select where Gemini can search for information

Minimize or hide the bottom bar
By default, the Gemini bar automatically minimizes to clear your screen and help you focus on what you write.
To show the Gemini bar again, at the bottom, hover over Gemini .
Move bottom bar to side panel
To keep Gemini open while you work, you can move the bottom bar to the side panel. It provides a larger response display for improved readability.
- On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
- At the bottom bar, enter your prompt. For example:
- âGenerate FAQs based on recent email conversationsâ
- âAdd a table listing actions items and next stepsâ
- âGenerate an email summarizing this document so that I can share it with executive shareholders via emailâ
- âChange all of the heading to blue colorâ
- Click Send action

- At the bottom bar, click Switch to side panel
.
- Optional: To switch back, at the top of the side panel, click Switch to bottom bar

Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.
If you get a suggestion thatâs inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can let us know by submitting feedback. Your feedback can help improve AI-assisted Workspace features and broader Google efforts in AI.
- In the bottom bar, click Leave feedback

- Or, in the side panel, click Good response
or Bad response
.
- Or, in the side panel, click Good response
- Select the data you want to share. This includes prompts and outputs.
- Enter additional feedback.
- Click Submit.
