Control smart home devices on your Google TV

The home panel enables quick access to controlling compatible smart home devices like thermostats, lights, locks, and cameras from your Google TV. You can turn them on or off and change some settings using your remote.

The home panel works with devices that you’ve connected to your Home in the Google Home app. Some of these smart devices include:

  • Lights
  • Thermostats
  • Locks
  • Cameras
  • Plugs
  • Vacuums
  • TVs
  • Speakers

Eligibility

  • You need to be an owner or member of a Home in the Google Home app that your Google TV profile is a part of.

    • Kids profiles are not supported for the home panel.

  • Your Google TV device must be in standard mode (not apps-only, or basic mode).

  • You need to opt in to the home panel on your Google TV.

  • There must be at least one smart home device aside from your Google TV in your Home.

  • You must have an eligible device:

    • Google TV Streamer (4K) device.

    • Chromecast with Google TV devices.

      • Note: For Chromecast with Google TV devices, you must also join Public Preview.

1. Set up devices in the Google Home app

Before you set up the home panel, set up smart devices in the Google Home app.

2. Set up the home panel

If you haven’t set up your Google TV yet, learn how to Set up Google TV Streamer (4K) and Voice Remote.

Upon the initial launch of the home panel on Google TV, a welcome screen will appear which will enable you to opt-in. This must be turned on in order to use the home panel on your TV.

If you were unable to opt-in upon initial launch, it can also be turned on by following the steps below:

  1. Open the quick settings dashboard using the Settings Icon on the top part of your Google TV screen.

  2. Click on Settings beside your profile icon Accounts & Sign-in User Profile Google Home.

  3. Click on the toggle on/off icon to turn on or off your home panel accessibility from your Google TV.

Note: The doorbell toggle button will only appear if there is a connected doorbell in your home.

3. Open the home panel

You can open your home panel through the quick settings dashboard which is accessible via Settings on the top part of your Google TV screen or by long-pressing the home button on your remote. Once open, navigate to the home panel tile to view and access your devices.

The top part of the home panel will display groups of devices while your Favorites can be controlled below it.

4. Control smart devices on the home panel

The home panel in your Google TV can be used to control smart devices in your home. The devices that show up on the home panel are the devices you set up on your favorites in the Google Home app Google Home app.

  1. Set up your smart home devices in the Google Home app.

  2. Make sure your Google TV and Google Home app Google Home app are signed into the same account.

  3. Open your home panel.

  4. Your spaces, such as Cameras or Lighting, are listed at the top of your home panel. Tap one to find the specific device you want to control. Below your spaces, you'll find your favorite devices for quick access.

5. Customize the home panel

The home panel on your Google TV is synchronized with your Google Home app Google Home app. To add a device to your favorites or reorder the current list, refer to Meet the Google Home app.

Fix issues with the home panel

You might have issues with the home panel, like:

  • You’re unable to access the home panel from your Google TV quick settings dashboard.

  • You get an error message when you try to access the home panel.

If you created a new Google Account to set up your device, you may need to wait 36 hours for your new Google Home structure to sync with the home panel.

If you're still having issues, follow the instructions below.

Clear data and reload the Google TV and Ambient mode apps

  1. From the Google TV home screen, select All settings .

  2. Tap Apps See all apps Show system apps.

  3. Tap Google TV Clear data OK.

  4. Tap Force stopOK.

  5. Repeat the process for the Ambient mode app. From the Google TV home screen, select All settings .

  6. Tap Apps See all apps Show system apps.

  7. Tap Ambient mode Clear data OK.

  8. Tap Force stopOK.

  9. Press the home button on your Voice Remote.

  10. Select Settings check if the home panel tile is visible.

  11. If the home panel tile doesn’t appear, wait 15-20 minutes for the tile to sync.
