Change service settings for different users

You can customize many service settings in the Google Admin console for different users in your organization. For example, you can let only your sales department publish Google Drive files on the web. To do this, place everyone in the sales department in their own organizational unit. Then, turn on publishing permissions just for that organizational unit.

Change settings for an organizational unit

To complete these steps, you need the appropriate administrator privileges. Depending on your privileges, you might not see all the controls needed to complete these steps. Learn more about administrator privileges.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. Add an organizational unit for the users whose settings you want to change.
  3. Move users to the organizational unit.
  4. Go to the settings page for the service.
  5. Click a section to open the service settings you want to change.

If the settings can be applied to different organizational units, your organization tree opens to the left.

  6. In the organization tree, select the organizational unit that contains your users.

Initially, the organizational unit inherits the settings of its parent.

  7. Change the setting for that organizational unit. Skip this step if you just want to restore the inherited value.

  8. To update an organizational unit, click one of the following:
    • Override—Overrides the value inherited from the parent organizational unit
    • Save—Updates an override
    • Inherit—Restores the inherited value

Text under the setting marks whether it's Overridden or Inherited.

Changes can take up to 24 hours but typically happen more quickly. Learn more
