My favorite albums of 2024, #5.
Holy shit. Relentlessly experimental This Heat post-punk with rich, sultry Nina Simone vocals. Totally unique and original, I've never heard anything like it but hope I hear more soon.
Favorite track: Pant.

An album like this comes around every 2 years for me. It is an introduction to a new genre and it leaves such a sweet taste in my mouth. The experimental sound mixed with the warm vocal delivery, it's perfect.
Favorite track: Pant.

Could this be the lost tapes of Nina Simone singing for Beefheart's Magic Band? This album represents an excellent evolution - through 2 generations since the early years of Dada Rock through 70âs no-wave and 90âs experimentalism... expressed through soulful, tuneful blues. Beautiful.
Favorite track: no sleep deep risk.
âIf I don't make it, I love uâ is Still House Plantsâ third LP and the fullest embodiment of their sound to date. Where âFast Editâ formed with quick attachment and jump cuts, âIf I don't make itâ is shaped by persistence - a commitment to the songs that makes the music solid, warmer and accepted.
Marking the trioâs decade of friendship, this is the first record written whilst all living in the same city since 2017's âAssemblagesâ. The band rehearsed it relentlessly, playing for nobody except themselves, consistently building support for one another and growing the way they play. Jessâ voice is deeper. Finâs guitar is full size, richer. David drums harder. Focused on one point together, everyone gets bigger and nothing falls apart. The guitar and the drums blend, raise the voice, make room for what is being said, what is felt.
When able to finally record, production allowed layers, gave elasticity, a chance to fully stretch. Playing with length and connections, the band brought in analogue techniques - a Lesley cabinet on âHeadlightâ, sidechaining the snare with the guitar, pushing vocals through cheap DJ software - each process an attempt to bring one instrument closer to another, to give bass, body, backup.
âIf I don't make it, I love uâ seeks beauty, holds feeling maximum and builds surety with its sound. The most generous SHP record to date, the music is wide open, demands less. Play it again, it will come clear.

Praise for 'If i don't make it, i love u'
"They're just a ridiculously tight band, at the peak of their thing, apparently enjoying every minute of it. A great album, 10/10.' - Boomkat
"Still House Plants are the most vital band in Britain today, in every sense, and we will be blessed indeed if we get a better album from these shores all year." - The Guardian
"In their seemingly telepathic interplay, the London post-rock trio eschews typical song forms in favor of a kind of collective flickering; their music tracks the process of its creation." - Pitchfork

Just the kind of gentle soundtrack I need when I am doing simple repetitive manual tasks. Impossible to decide on a favourite track because they are all wonderful. Jeremy Cherfas

I don't know you. But I reach out my hand in greeting. We quickly become friends as we chat about nothing. That's how finding this album feels to me. Bigdaisy19k
