The Planetary Governor was a position used by the late Galactic Republic and the subsequent Galactic Empire to enforce law and order on member worlds throughout their domains.[1]
History[]
The Sector Governance Decree instituted towards the end of the Clone Wars placed planetary governors on every planet in the Republic, along with their own regiments of clone troopers as security forces. Many of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's lackeys and supporters were given the position as reward for their loyalty.[1]
After the Republic transitioned into the Empire, the Planetary Governors themselves came under the supervision of the Sector Governors, the Moffs.[2] Governors were seldom native to their planets, so that they wouldn't interfere with local politicking. They were instructed to let local politicians run their own affairs unless such courses of action conflicted with Imperial goals.[3]
The position of the planetary governor was retained during the reign of the New Republic.[4]
