- "How many times must I remind you of the Commerce Treaty of 1647? The Trade Federation is neutral."
- ―Lott Dod
The Commerce Treaty of 1647 was a legal covenant of the Galactic Republic that, during times of war, could assure the neutrality of a group such as the Trade Federation,[1] which controlled most of the interstellar shipping passing through the galaxy's Rim territories.[3] During the Clone Wars between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Senator Lott Dod of the Trade Federation continually invoked the treaty to counter accusations that the corporation was in league with the Confederacy due to doing business with them.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
The Commerce Treaty of 1647 was first mentioned in "Sphere of Influence," the fourth episode of the canon animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars' third season,[2] which originally aired on October 1, 2010.[4] The creation of the Coruscant reckoning calendar introduced in the 2018 reference book Star Wars: Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious[5] was, according to Pablo Hidalgo, partially inspired by the line referencing the treaty.[6] However, there has been no official confirmation that "1647" is a C.R.C. date.
