Synopsis[]

Suction Cup Symphony 028

"And you guys! Do you really think that billboard is more important than my musical genius?"

On one average day in Bikini Bottom, Squidward is practicing his clarinet while SpongeBob does some gardening. He thinks that Squidward went to an Italian restaurant called Mario's. Suddenly, SpongeBob notices two construction workers putting up a billboard. Thinking Squidward's music is flatulence, SpongeBob becomes too noisy to cover it up until Squidward alerts him to stop. Then, angry at the billboard workers, he discovers the Bikini Bottom Symphony Orchestra is holding a competition for an original score.

Meanwhile, Patrick accidentally breaks his buttocks. SpongeBob decides he should see a doctor, but he does not have health insurance, so SpongeBob decides to bring the doctor to Patrick by acting as his doctor, who is making a house call. Squidward tries not to get distracted by SpongeBob's home doctoring and manages to finish it. After turning in his score, he earns an opportunity to conduct it with the orchestra. But as the performance begins, he realizes that he wrote down all of the sounds of SpongeBob's doctoring to complete the symphony. In the middle of the performance, he finds SpongeBob squeezing a rubber duck with Patrick saying "Woo!" while he is sitting, bashing his brain, causing a flatulence noise and making his eyes pop out, all while Squidward is conducting and barely paying attention to his conducting.

The audience gives a round of applause to Squidward, who is delighted. SpongeBob says to Squidward does not try to get a "swelled head." The camera then cuts to Squidward, whose head starts to inflate due to Patrick squeezing the pump as the screen cuts to black, ending the episode with the sound of an explosion (meaning Squidward's head blew up).

Trivia[]

General[]

  • This episode was originally titled "Underwater Boogaloo."[6]
  • This is the second episode in which Squidward is seen conducting a band. The first was "Band Geeks."
  • Starting on this episode (in Luke Brookshier episodes) the storyboard director and writers text was reposed.
  • In "Suds" and "The Splinter," Patrick impersonates a doctor and treats SpongeBob. This time, the tables are turned: SpongeBob pretends to be a doctor and treats Patrick.
  • The fish playing the piano in this episode is the same one that SpongeBob sits next to at Reef Cinema in "Something Smells."
  • This is the first episode to play the track "Film Fanfare (A)" since "The Secret Box" in season 2.
  • In recent airings the episode's end scene with Squidward's head exploding was cut. This is due to the screen cutting to black when this happens. On the DVD and digital releases, the ending was left intact.
    • However, in some Nicktoons airings, the popping sound is also left intact.[citation needed] Interestingly, some Nicktoons airings don't leave the scene intact, with only around half a second of the pop being left in before the episode ends.
      • In the Paramount+ release, the explosion sound is left partially intact.
  • This is the first episode where the track "Monocle and Pocket-Watch" plays.
  • This is one of the few times when Squidward is actually praised for his talents.

A comparison between the two episodes. (Left: "Squid's Day Off," Right: "Suction Cup Symphony").

  • When Squidward finally finishes writing his song, he has that same look on his face that he has in "Squid's Day Off" when he locks himself inside his house.
    • However, sand is added to his eyes in this episode.
  • The machine that Patrick is in looks exactly like the iron lung SpongeBob dreams about in "Funny Pants."
  • The storm in Squidward's brain is similar to the one in "Breath of Fresh Squidward."
