Synopsis[]

Squidward's Sick Daze 058

Squidward calls in sick.

Squidward wakes up after having a nightmare from working at the Krusty Krab, with the customers yelling at him, SpongeBob annoying him, and Mr. Krabs forcing him to clean everything up. He then mopes about the activities he hasn't done, like his unfinished painting, his symphony, and his fresh strudel, which Patrick gobbles up. Squidward then ultimately decides that instead of going to work, he will stay home and "dive into an ocean of Squidward."

He then calls Mr. Krabs and lies about being sick, but the latter is not fooled. He then goes over to Squidward's house and has SpongeBob take care of him until he is better, much to Squidward's dismay. Squidward tries to relax by finishing his painting, playing his clarinet, and eating his strudel, but SpongeBob constantly annoys him in an attempt to treat his disease.

SpongeBob later checks Squidward's temperature, only to find that it is normal. SpongeBob then concludes that Squidward is better now and they can go back to work, but Squidward tricks SpongeBob by sticking the thermometer into the oven, making it break. SpongeBob then gets a bunch of ice from the mountains to cool Squidward down.

Squidward's Sick Daze 147

Squidward's fake disease turns out to be real.

SpongeBob then realizes that he has been treating the symptoms instead of the disease. Squidward then claims he has "acute spotting sclorboritis," but he realizes it is actually real when SpongeBob finds it in a book. When Squidward sees the way it is treated, he then says it is actually "Plerkington's syndrome," which SpongeBob "cures" by using leeches to suck Squidward's blood, jellyfish to electrocute Squidward, and using a rake to clear the leaves in Squidward's lungs.

Mr. Krabs later calls to check on Squidward, to which the latter claims he is all better and begs the former to let him come to work. However, thinking that Squidward still needs to learn his lesson, Mr. Krabs pretends that Squidward is still very sick and tells SpongeBob to step up the cure. SpongeBob then seizes a sea urchin on Squidward.

The day after at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob describes all the things he did to Squidward and Mr. Krabs laughs. Squidward arrives in bandages, but takes them off to unveil the Handsome Squidward, which Mr. Krabs faints at. Handsome Squidward says that SpongeBob cured his illnesses and goes to the register. Unfortunately, the customers begin yelling at Squidward for him to take their orders and SpongeBob begins annoying him again. Squidward then loses his hair and begins going back to his normal self and melts down, claiming he is going to be sick, as the episode ends.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Despite this episode being advertised first, its sister episode premiered before it during the original airing.
    • This episode originally had the packaging number of 269a, but it was later switched around to be 269b, so this may explain why it was promoted instead.[11]
  • The plot is very similar to "Squiditis," as both episodes have to do with Squidward faking an illness. He also gets some time out of work in that episode and is subsequently subjected to SpongeBob in that episode.
  • The title is a pun on "sick days," a common phrase referring to an authorized work leave because of an illness.
  • The painting was originally different, but it was changed in the final version.
  • This is the last SpongeBob SquarePants episode to have Philip Harris as an associate producer before he left the show to be the line producer on John Trabbic's show Middlemost Post, but he was an associate producer for Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years until the episode "Hot Pearl-tato," the last episode from the first batch of season 1.

  • As an homage to her storyboard plussing work on this episode and "Under the Small Top," series' storyboard artist Savannah Reeves gave a nod to the series while playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons: "The little Spongebob and Patrick were a special touch - I got hired to freelance on my first show about a week and a half before the COVID shutdown."[3]
  • Patrick's scream from "FarmerBob" is reused when he falls from the window.
  • In the UK and Ireland, the scene where Squidward imagines falling down a waterfall while "swimming into an ocean of Squidward" was edited to darken the screen.[12]

Episode references[]

Squidward's Sick Daze 188

Handsome Squidward returns in this episode.

  • The 'Handsome Squidward' face from "The Two Faces of Squidward" makes an appearance in this episode. However, his face looks more like his regular one in this episode.
  • Handsome Squidward having long blonde hair is a callback to "The Original Fry Cook," where Squidward had long blond hair in the past until he lost it on the day Jim quit working at the Krusty Krab.
  • The Bon-Bon snack from "Good Neighbors" also reappears in this episode; it is seen in Squidward's daydream.
  • The face Squidward makes when he screams in his nightmare is similar to the one he makes when he is screaming in "Graveyard Shift."

Cultural references[]

  • When Squidward is getting tortured by everyone in his dream, some drops of rain kept dropping down from a hole in the ceiling and landing on Squidward's forehead as he was slowly driving to insanity. This is a reference to an archaic form of mental/psychological torture called Chinese water torture.
  • Squidward's strudel looks identical to a Pillsbury Toaster Strudel.
  • In the original storyboards for the episode, SpongeBob's painting was originally going to feature SpongeBob and Squidward standing behind a heart in love. According to one of the hashtags on the Instagram post from the storyboard revisionist who drew this, (Dylan 'Houston' King) it references the character shipping of "SquidBob," which features SpongeBob and Squidward in a romantic relationship.[5]

Squidward's Sick Daze 089

A bit of a slip up in the painting.

  • On Squidward's painting, SpongeBob's arm is the same color as Squidward's skin.
  • The shining reflection on Mr. Krabs' right arm is missing.
  • Although she worked on it,[9] Joann Chang is not credited as a character designer for this episode.
