Description[]

Junior looks like any other scallop; he has a purple shell and a red tongue.

Characteristics[]

Due to his infancy, Junior communicates through chirping like a songbird. He hates Krabby Patties, even the tiny variety which are catered to babies like him. He also dislikes donuts and French fries, but he likes to eat apples and ice cream both with worms inside, referencing the common stereotype of birds eating worms. He also needs to have his diaper changed very often. Junior makes similar crying sounds to a young baby very frequently throughout the episode.

Role in episode[]

"Rock-a-Bye Bivalve"[]

Junior is found by SpongeBob and Patrick in a bush. SpongeBob discovers that Junior is still a baby and cannot fly. Since Junior has no family to take care of him, SpongeBob and Patrick become his adoptive "parents." He is mostly tended to by SpongeBob while Patrick irresponsibly neglects his parental responsibilities, due to respectively choosing the gender roles of mother and father.

This frustrates SpongeBob to no end, eventually leading up to an argument between them. However, they cease arguing after seeing Junior standing in SpongeBob's two-story bedroom window, and try to save him, but do not make it. They get sad at failing Junior but discover he has learned to fly at the end of the episode.

Junior thanks SpongeBob for caring for him with a kiss, while he drops a coconut on Patrick's head but kisses him too and they watch Junior leave in adoration.

Trivia[]

  • SpongeBob uses his pants as a temporary cradle for Junior.
  • This is the second scallop SpongeBob has taken into custody. He also has a female pet scallop named Shelley who has appeared in a cage in his bedroom since the very first episode.
  • Junior gets so hungry that he nibbles on Patrick's head when Patrick looks at him through SpongeBob's pants.

  • A couple mistakes SpongeBob and Patrick as the biological parents of Junior when the trio walk by, with a thought bubble expressing confusion over how a sponge and a starfish can crossbreed and give birth to a scallop, let alone achieve homosexual reproduction.
