Minor in Portuguese
The undergraduate minor in Portuguese requires a minimum of 15 s.h. in Portuguese courses (prefix PORT), including 12 s.h. in University of Iowa courses numbered PORT:2500 or above; credit earned in a University of Iowa study abroad program also may be counted toward the minor. Students must maintain a g.p.a. of at least 2.00 in all courses for the minor and in all UI courses for the minor. Coursework in the minor may not be taken pass/nonpass. A maximum of 3 s.h. of transfer credit may be applied toward the minor. Furthering Language Incentive Program (FLIP) credit may not be counted toward the minor.
Students with previous knowledge of Portuguese language, should take the World Languages Placement Test (WLPT) to determine the best level for your first enrollment in a language course.
The Portuguese minor offers several levels of courses in Portuguese language, including one for Spanish speakers, as well as courses in linguistics, culture, and literature.
Portuguese and Spanish are closely related languages; if you know Spanish you can build on that base to learn Portuguese. Whatever career you pursue, speaking these two languages can multiply your chances for success. Portuguese courses can count toward your Spanish major.
