Take a Deep Dive

“Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.”

Article 13(2) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

In the spirit of one of the great founding documents of humanity, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we are bringing you the just completed Study and Discussion Guide that accompanies our film BORDERLAND | The Line Within today to commemorate Human Rights Day.

This comprehensive guide has something for everyone working for immigrant rights and studying the border. It is a thoughtful deep dive into the history, themes and issues raised within the documentary itself, especially the inner workings of the border industrial complex. The guide has more information about the backstory of the protagonists and their organizations, additional resources, how to use big tech for good, and how you can act locally. It has lesson plans and suggested questions for students to contemplate, research and write about.

Educational institutions can license BORDERLAND | The Line Within for their media library through New Day Films, our educational film cooperative.

The Study and Discussion Guide was written by one of the film’s protagonists, Dr. Giovanni Batz, who is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at the

University of California Santa Barbara. In part, Dr. Batz’s research examines the historical roots of Guatemalan displacement and migration to the U.S., and conditions at the U.S.-Mexico border. The co-author is Guatemalan scholar Václav Mašek who is a doctoral candidate at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Vaclav is also a freelance journalist and a member of the Skylight SolidariLabs Latin American leadership team. He serves as BORDERLAND’s Impact Campaign Community Screenings Coordinator.
