Please create a userpage for your bot before requesting a flag :). Cheers, Razorflame 23:01, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't done. :P Patience grasshopper. -Djsasso (talk) 23:14, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Test run needed. Given there are questions about the contributions on the en:wp version (of its 77 edits, 9 are adds - best for checking proper placement in the list - and some needed to be reverted. 20% error rate is high for something that is not being checked regularly. Run the 50 edits (hopefully more adds here than en:wp, but that should be fairly common) and see if the percentage gets much better first. --Creol(talk) 06:23, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem will do, only needed to revert a two or three and those were human error with me misunderstanding what was being said so not really 20% error. Some of what look like reverts are the bot removing incorrect links to wikis and then the second edit adding the correct ones. There were a number where the year was wrong in the articles. But I will run a test run now, I assumed you would want one anyways but wanted to wait till you said go. -Djsasso (talk) 13:06, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There you go. 52 edit run. If you want more I can do that as well. Most of them are adds. -Djsasso (talk) 17:52, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have you had a chance to check my edits over at all? If not thats cool, with the holidays and all people are pretty busy. :) -Djsasso (talk) 18:13, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AWB (bot) access has been given so you can run it through some test edits before approval. -- Creol(talk) 03:53, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Trial with pywikipedia done. I apologise for not waiting for further approval to do a task with pywikipedia, however there were no crats around and this would be a small test (7 edits with pywikipedia, as well as a few unsuccessful ones.) There were some glitches, which I talked to Misza and sorted all of them out. It will only edit user talk space, unless I change the paramaters. Fully successful edit, with proper edit summary, is here. Can I please get my bot flagged :) Samekh (talk) 12:32, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not done - Other than the testing of the bot, the sandbox is realy only edited very infrequently. It usually is not edited every day let alone often enough that a bot resetting it would be flooding New Changes. • Description: Reverts Vandals, see contribs

--Chris G (talk) 04:19, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not done - Like the sandbox bot, the activity of the bot is not a threat. In two hours it only reverted two edits which were not tests by the owner. Also earlier in the testing, the owner had to revert the bot on a warning. In addition, the fact that the bot warns multiple times about a last warning with no report is a bit scary and/or useless. A last warning has no meaning if you warn them again 5 minutes later and never bothered to report it to any one. Keeping the bot visible lets others know the vandalism was reverted and the user warned. This lets them know they do not need to revert it as well - with a hidden bot, peoples time is wasted reverting edits which were already reverted, but hidden in the process. People can also keep an eye out for level 4 warnings and deal with matters the bot does not seem to be doing (Alerting/blocking). -- Creol(talk) 05:59, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The Bot would have reported if (a) the level 4 template had the correct comment in it which I then fixed (b) Had a bot flag which allows it to bypass the antispam captcha (the template it was using to report had an external link in it). On the subject of actuly flagging the edits as bot edits, the bot can tell wikipedia not to flag the edits as a bot edit, so the edits will still be shown on the rc feed etc, however I still would like a bot flag for two reasons(this applies to both bots)
  1. A Bot flag allows for higher api usage
  2. A Bot flag allows the bot to bypass certain captchas(see above about reporting) --Chris G (talk) 07:34, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know would it be hard to modify the bot so it has better edit summaries, like:
External Links -> Other websites (leave out if unchanged)
Added stub tag (leave out if unchanged)
Iw:en (..)
Also could the bot add {{uncat}} for articles without categories? --Eptalon (talk) 21:33, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a way to only replace "External Links" with "Other Websites" in the main (article) namespace? Pages in other namespaces probably contain discussion of this topic, and mentions of it. So, those shouldn't be replaced. — Jonas Rand · (talk) 04:31, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The text replacement should be triggered off of the headline text (including the =='s) so this should not be a problem. -- Creol(talk) 07:42, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As it is manual run for many of the issues, the summary is individually editable, but usually just describes the base fuction it is running and can append and automatic text replacement it did ("External Links -> Other websites"). Uncat'ing would be difficult to set up automatically, and both manual automatic use can cause issues when dealing with categories from templates. About the only place uncat'ing by bot would be safe would be Special:uncategorizedpages and that realy is not needed as it just moves them from one uncat list to another which is not productive. There are still some minor issues with the function of the "bot", but none that should not be able to be handled on Tholly's talk page while it is functioning as a bot so no reason for this not to be  Done -- Creol(talk) 07:42, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
About the changing of External links: as Creol syas, the automatic function only does things on mainspace in == ==s. Manual function will look else where, for templates and things copied straight from enwiki, but I check those. And it should never goes to talk pages or Wikipedia pages. And finally, I'm trying to work on the edit summaries :) Thanks! - tholly --Turnip-- 08:38, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot. First pass done, about 600 added markups and 260 removed ones. --Guandalug (talk) 06:31, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One thing I noticed was that it removed FA links on a couple articles that it shouldn't have. Vezina Trophy for example. Now maybe I don't know all the nuances of what it is looking for. But Vezina Trophy is definately featured on en.wiki. -Djsasso (talk) 19:15, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That article is 'featured', yes, but it's a "Featured List", not a "Featured article", and the ppl on the en-WP especially asked for Link FA only to be set for Features Articles, not lists, portals and such (same request came from the de-WP, so...). Thus, from the bot's point of view, that is not a featured article. --Guandalug (talk) 20:04, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh ok, and that was what I thought might be the case. -Djsasso (talk) 18:55, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Considering how often this bot edits, it wouldn't be a good idea...Razorflame 14:59, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Given that it checks as often as every 4 minutes and updates its pages for every editor on its list that has made an edit since its last update, it could easily flood RC. If it were just editing the change in status, that would be one thing, but since it also edits a host of logistics pages to keep the status up to date, I would strongly suggest we grant it bot status quickly. The more users on its list that are active at one time, the more active it will get. (I would do it, but as it is being discussed here, I defer to the consensus.) -- Creol(talk) 15:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Blocked it, due to the big scary message on it's EN page. I think we should wait for clarification of whether it's OK before unblocking. I realise it's volume thing, and would only really be a major problem on large wikis, but I think we're best to wait. Archer7 - talk 19:45, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The bot has zero contributions. There is no indication on how the bot functions at all to determine the need for bot status. Were it a Pywiki IW bot, it's actions would be in a known range and we can expect it generate a certain amount of traffic, but as a Archive bot on a wiki with no active archive practices, support for the need should be demonstrated. Looking at the other 5 John Bots (3 en, 2 common), all are either wikiproject or images based. As we have no wikiprojects (and for the most part our policy is fairly anti-project) and we have a "no-image policy", none of the main functions of the John bots are likely to generate any activity to need the bot flag. If anything, a bot whose main ancestry is tagging wikiproject related talkpage and image pages would need to have it's actions examined more closely to ensure it is not violating policy and practices. -- Creol(talk) 08:20, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I was following the English Wikipedia method (get approval before running). I know I run those bots on the other do things that wouldn't benefit this project, So I want to run this bot because The Simple English Wikipedia does not have an archival bot. So I guess I can run it while waiting for a flag, right? Compwhizii (talk) 19:40, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NigelJBot (talk · contribs) will perform AWB tasks currently performed by NigelJ (talk · contribs), the tasks are nothing to do with those J Di has applied for (External links etc) instead I'm intending to:

  • Interwiki sorting (I know this has been in discussion on Simple Talk, but I have built a local copy, with a fix for this problem, examples of the bot running are: [1] [2] [3])
  • Automated Category changes, when required

I do not intend to auto tag articles (I actually oppose this), neither do I intend to do find and replaces (apart from above mentioned typo fixing).

Not done - of the five test edits made, you needed to fix three of them. This is not a good thing. Your previous bot request was denied due to improperly categorizing articles. Again, not good. Bot flags are only granted to users with a proven record of consistantly good contributions. Given that our current AN is over two weeks, the pre-archive was mid summer and the fact that it is WP:AN and not ANI (as listed) worries me that it will be archived at a rate that is not in keeping with our pace locally. Many things that are needed on en:wp are useless here and I think this concept is one of them. Even given the need for archiving, with the level of activity, I have to question if a bot flag would be needed for what would realistically be a once a month action per page. And more, are the admins here incapable of keeping an eye on things so much that a bot is needed to do their job for them. Is a bot more capable than our admins to point out that a discussion is dead and needs archiving? -- Creol(talk) 06:27, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See Bot Approvals. Also note the "good contributor" point. While you have a good number of edits and no hint of issues, you are still only effectively a 2 week old account (created in Feb 08, but didn't start editing until two weeks ago). You identify as en:wp Shapiro10 (who would qualify as good contributor give account age and # of edits), but there is no confirmation (or better yet, SUL - although that would still require confirmation for a rename request but would be much more useful in the long run.) Allowing an account with only two weeks of documented activity to operate semi-invisibly is just not a good idea. -- Creol(talk) 12:48, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pywiki iwbots I tend to grant on sight most of the time (proven platform with minimal issues) but only for editors with established histories on some wikipedia project (usually their home wiki - easier now to check with SUL) which this user does not have. -- Creol(talk) 07:40, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Denied. Given that you still used your main account to make the AWB changes you aplied for bot status on a seperate account for, it hints that you seem to have a tendency to mix and match accounts and would likely "accidently" edit from the bot account. Also as I just had to rollback some 25 AWB cat edits which were in violation of standard practice here (see Wikipedia:Categorization focusing on issues with placing article in categories they are already in the subcategory for and naming conventions), giving bot status seems likely to lead to more issues going unnoticed. -- Creol(talk) 08:00, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

B)I do understand the category system, if you look here I made about 15-20 edits last night, not against Wikipedia practice. The Microsoft issue was human error. I will not go in and edit using DaPunkBot. I swear that would be the case. I have not logged into DaPunkBot in Firefox. The only thing I have logged into the bot in was AWB. To tell you the truth, I really don't see any reason for there to be a welcoming bot with our current level of users that actually stick around on this site. Most of the editors that join here usually join and then not make any edits. We don't want the bot to welcome every single new editor that signs up to this site if this would be the case as it would add too many pages to this site that aren't needed. Also, typo fixing is something that should be noticed to make sure that they are correct typo fixes. Cheers, Razorflame 19:41, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No to auto typo fixing. There's so many reasons why a word may be misspelled, and doing it automatically is a bad idea. I'd be happy for it to be done manually though. A welcome bot would be a great idea. It's nice to get new messages, and anyhow there's no limit to the number of pages we have. Razor, if you have an issue with page numbers, think of all the indefinitely blocked users' pages. Majorly (talk) 19:46, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
AWB has a built in typo correction feature, that I was going to enable for any other edits it made. Oh, and I would manually welcome the users (but having the bot flag gets rid of the "using AWB" bit of the edit summary, so it is better to do it on a bot. On English Wikiquote, I think it was, there is a welcome bot, and it never seemed to have the same feeling I have had when a human types {{subst:welcome}} ~~~~.) And, Razorflame, my theory is that Wiki is not paper, and anyway, I got welcomed last year, although I never actually recieved the message until this year, when I logged in again. Just to reiterate, at the moment there isn't anything too automated about the bot at the moment - it's AWB with added features for bots (and as there isn't an AWB test wiki, it might be a while before I can get all the functions sorted as it's all a bit of guessing). Basic English Bot (request)

Meta bot request

I'm on Wikipedia as SBHarris, and just discovered Simple English Wikipedia. Kick me if this has been suggested someplace else, but it occurs to me that what Simple English Wikipedia needs, is a lot of robotic flagging of articles to see which of their component words are part of the Basic English 850, or 1500, or derivatives thereof (a much longer list). The output might give words in three different colors, for example.

It would be most useful if a user had some way of running the `bot repetitively on an article, while editing it. The best place for the bot to run in the background, would obviously be to have it run every time the user did a "show preview." Results would come up very much like the "linked" or "unlinked" colors now used for THOSE purposes.

For this reason, such a "bot" would really ideally be part of the mediawiki software that runs this place. So this would more than a bot, but change in the basic software. But anything (even a bot which runs once a day and checks all articles) would help.

Without a lot of experience, it's quite difficult for the average native English speaker to tell if words below a certain complexity are part of the Basic English 850 or 1500 list. However, with these things automatically flagged by bot, it IS easy, even for inexperienced people to spot target words outside basic English, and then to make a decision if there is some shorter and more basic replacement that works as well, or if the word needs to stand "as is."

Won't one of your considerate 'bot makers (or you software mogels who did the original programming for this Version) consider working on this? It really would change everything here.

Addendum: I can think of more complex stuff, and most of these ideas apparently aren't as creative as I thought, since a friend of mine also came up with most of them, even as I was explaining the problem, before I'd gotten to my solutions. (So something of this sort has got to happen here eventually-- it's only a matter of WHEN, not IF). Here's a related Bot solution: There is need for a Reverse Thesaurus Bot, which is a normal thesaurus but with the Basic English word or phrase as a "redirect". This would not only flag words as not being part of BE 850 or BE 1500, but then also, for lots of words, might be able to give the Basic English word or phrase which is the suggested replacement. There is probaby such a thing already in print form, for writers of Basic English literature. But the process needs badly to be automated here, and probably could be. Here if nowhere else!

Sharris 20:56, 8 October 2006 (UTC) (SBHarris on standard Wikipedia).[reply]

I have an idea. Rather than a bot that no-one will use, why don't we just set up a web-based Java system. You type the article name in the box, it fetches it and does it with no installs. It's quite a basic system, but I'm not sure if I can do it. Archer7 - talk 21:44, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to do something like this now in PHP. I'd stick it on my hosting first, but it could easily be integrated with MediaWiki if necessary. Maybe a bit of code to put in a monobook.js creating an extra tab to the script for interested users would be easier than dealing with integration into the software. Anyway, I'll let you know when I get stuck and give up. Thanks, Archer7 - talk 11:10, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are of course free to continue making those changes, but, if you wanted, you could hold off and let the bots make those changes.
