Edit Conflict?

Hi Griffinofwales, I saw the article through RCP (Recent Changes) and I tagged if for deletion but there must have been an edit conflict because I might have tagged it first before you and I think you overridden my edit. I just noticed that! We must have that tagged it at the same time. I did not realise that Twinkle would overwrite a QD instead of warning me that the article had been tagged. Muhammad category

Do you think Muhammad should be in a different category based on his location or nationality? He's in Category:People from Mecca, which is in Category:People by city in Saudi Arabia, but obviously Saudi Arabia didn't exist at the time. Mavenly (talk) 00:14, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Great question! Since we are categorising the article on Muhammad, the article categories should focus on the subject of the article (Muhammad). With that focus, the question should be.. where is he from? The answer is Mecca, so the categorisation is correct. Griff (talk) 00:21, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That is a great point, however that does not meet he is any less from Mecca. The categorisation tree we use here will typically sort articles in the following way:

People by state
- People from COUNTRYNAME
  - People from HISTORICAL-LOCATION-NAME

Thanks for looking into it. I guess there may not have been a specific country that Mecca was part of, so the Mecca category can go directly in the Saudi Arabia category. Does that mean we should put something like Category:People from the Maurya Empire in Category:Indian people and Category:Pakistani people (generally, all the countries which it currently include the area. Two things to consider. First, Category:People from the Maurya Empire does not exist, and should only be created if it meets the categorisation guideline.
