About Research to Publication

What is Research to Publication?

Research to Publication is a research methodology and publishing programme for early career academics in healthcare research, brought to you by BMJ in collaboration with University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

The programme, made up of the 8 courses listed below, is focused entirely on healthcare research. The BMJ’s research editors and UCSF’s academics guide learners through the entire process from designing a study, to seeing it published in an international journal.

How many modules are there?

Research to Publication is comprised of 8 courses with 52 modules making up over 200 hours of learning.

Who writes Research to Publication modules?

Modules are written and presented by some of the foremost experts in research and publication, including several co-authors of the seminal textbook Designing Clinical Research. All the educators are published authors in their own right and include:

• Prof Deborah Grady, Associate Dean of Clinical and Translational Research at UCSF

• Dr Trish Groves, Associate editor, The BMJ, and Editorial consultant (former Head of Research, The BMJ)

Is Research to Publication available in different languages?

Research to Publication is only available in English at present.

Are the videos subtitled?

Yes, Research to Publication videos subtitles are in English. Our audio modules include transcripts.

What browser should I use to access Research to Publication?

You can use any browser to access RtoP. For an optimum experience, we recommend you use a PC or Mac.

What happens if I do not have access to the email to which I registered? Can this information be updated?

Please send an email to BMJ support ([email protected]) for access issues to Research to Publication. Please provide details of your name and institution.

Can I access the modules remotely?

If you have access to Research to Publication via access code, you can create your account and log in anywhere.

If you have access through IP range, you must create an account within your institution’s network. After your account is created, you can use your username and password to log in anywhere.


About the course

How can I see the English subtitles on videos?

When you start a video, click on the ‘CC’ symbol in the bottom right corner and select the settings you want.

Can I see video full screen?

When you press play on a video, click on the double-arrow symbol in the bottom right of the screen. Click on the symbol again (or press ‘Esc’) to reduce the screen back to its original size.

Why is an external link not working?

Research to Publication links to external websites and additional resources are tested frequently but occasionally pages are redesigned or moved. Please notify us at which link is broken at [email protected].

How do I download certificates of my activity?

When you successfully complete a module or course, you can claim your certificate by visiting the ‘Certificates’ tab in the top navigation. You can download certificates from here to save in your own records.

Do I have to buy the book that is suggested?

No, the book is recommended – you can complete the course without access to the book.

When is the course available?

This is a self-rhythm course. You do not have a deadline, as long as you or your institution has a valid subscription. However, your institution may have set its own deadline for course completion.

How long is each course?

Each module takes an average of 4 hours to complete, which includes about 2 hours of reading information on external sites and reflection.

Should I take the course in a specific order?

Unless your teacher or supervisor has instructed you to take modules in a specific order, you can take the course in the order that is relevant to you. We have created curriculum guides to help you get started:

  • Experienced researchers
  • Undergraduates and new researchers

What is the minimum qualification to pass the course?

You need to achieve 80% to pass a Research to Publication module.

Can I repeat a module?

Yes, you can complete a Research to Publication module as many times as you want.

Can I take a topic of my interest and jump to another module that interests me, or should I finish the module?

You can do the module in the order you want, unless your teacher or supervisor has asked you to take the course in a specific order. Please note that you will not receive a certificate if you do not successfully complete a module.

How long does a subscription last?

12 months. Subscriptions can start at any time and you will be contacted towards the end of your subscription period regarding renewing.

Can I sign up to a free trial?
Free trials are not currently available for Research to Publication. If you are interested in a demonstration for your institution, please contact:

Can I subscribe through a subscription agent?
Yes. Please contact your subscription agent.

Can I purchase access to just one module?
Institutions can only subscribe to the whole programme.
